Opinions of McDaniel Cues?

Best cue i've ever owned

Hello,

I received my McDaniel cue late October 04, and let me tell you it plays great! Let me say I have 5 shafts, 3 Predator 314’s and 2 McDaniel’s. McDaniel shafts play great, but I like playing with the 314’s better. My cue is a one of a kind and I waited almost a year for it, but it was well worth the wait. Besides the cue playing great, the cue’s craftsmanship is second to none. He made the cue EXACTLY the way I wanted it. I have purchased custom cues from Southwest, Coker, Gilbert, and PFD. My McDaniel has better craftsmanship and plays better then all of them. Cost and time are the only drawbacks to a McDaniel. My cues did run me a pretty penny and the wait was much longer then I anticipated, but in the end the money was definitely well spent and I would have waited longer! My cue is a Master Piece all the way.
My cue: Ebony, ivory, and silver
Ebony butt
Ebony Forearm
Ivory joint
Ivory Butt cap
Ivory ferrules
75 Ivory inlays, some with silver
19.2 oz.
Lizard Skin Wrap

Hope this helps.

Sorry for the cross-post, but I kinda need an answer on this one soon...

Has anyone here tried a Bill McDaniel cue?
http://www.billmcdaniel.com/

How would you describe its quality and hit? Thanks for replies in advance.
I would say McDaniel is a fair to above avg cuemaker, but be careful on how much you pay for one if you get one, because it wont go up in value and the resale on his cues in my opinion are horrible.

that's what i understand too. i haven't heard anyone get all gushy about a mcdaniel, except for maybe cbi1000. i think your assessment is on the nuts.

i think its unfair to call him fair to above average he has one of the
most impressive " resumes " of any cue maker and is a real artist

however your very correct about resale and i think in the long term that goes for many cues purchased at retail price by any cue maker in his prime

his cuemaking is very impressive. his cues are aesthetically as good as anyones. they are pretty expensive too and the resale is like those guys said. i have played with one of his more "plain" cues and it had a kinda "soft, mushy" hit. that is the best way i know to describe it. i'm not saying that it is bad but i like more of a solid hit like with a russ espiritu.

that doesn't sound characteristic of a "maryland cue" (phillippi, black boar, joss, scruggs etc..i tend to think they play kinda the same as they seem to know each other real well). could've been a bad shaft, or soft tip/ferrule combo.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. This really helps make shopping for a new custom cue a lot easier. I'm accustomed to the hit characteristics of my Schon w/ Predator-Z, but I'm now looking for a custom Szamboti-ish 8-pointer to be its successor. Who else would you recommend for stiff, solid-hitting cues with good feedback?

if you like your schon hit, then the cuemakers from maryland are not for you.

however,,,,,you can have them measure your schon shaft and copy. and everybody has a szamboti-type design in their bag,,,,,it's a classic
