Opinions on Joss and Pechauer Cues

If it's a production cue that you want, you can't go wrong with either one. In fact, I really like a few of the designs offered by Joss, very tradiitional and masculine with the veneered points and linen wrap.

I own a Pechauer and it plays real nice. it also has one of the best finishes that I have seen on a cue. You'll enjoy playing with Pechauer.

I own and play with both a Joss and Pechauer. I agree you absolutely cannot go wrong with either for the money invested.

As for play, my Joss seems to hit alot harder due to the stainless joint (and probably the cocobolo butt and forearm). The Pechauer (curly maple)plays a bit softer and hits quite well. I have no complaints about either.

As for asthetics and finishes, they are fairly equal. Both of mine have gorgeously figured wood with smooth hard finishes.

I did note that in my local shop had many of the same model Pechauers ( 2 different levels) , with different color finishes, where the wood had HUGE variances in figuring. I guess I got lucky because out of the 8 JP customs they had, none had even close to the figuring mine has, from any angle.

Custom cues are cool and all, and they are "custom" - I mean what YOU WANT is WHAT YOU SHOULD GET with a custom. But for me, some of the better "production" cues are so good for so little, that I'm hard pressed to see where another several hundred to invest in a custom is gonna elevate my game. Maybe some day, but as of now I'd be proud to own either of the two master builders mentioned above . . .

I got a Jacoby that was custom made for me, i.e., it's 60 inches long, has a leather wrap and short ferrules. These were the things that I asked for and he made the stick accordingly and it only cost me $495 and that's been about 5 years now. Oh, and that included 2 shafts that were also the diameters I wanted. You don't have to pay an arm and leg for some customizing.

12/08/1949, Vintage year my friend. The trunk of the MG is full of black Paki. I had to use a crow bar to open it.

I had an older Joss and the butt would crack and sometimes break if you hit the cue moderatel hard on the ground. The rubber in the butt was somewhat soft and would expand quite a bit if hit on the ground. The rubber was inside the butt so the expansion of the rubber would crack the butt.

I have a pechauer and have never had a problem with the butt cracking. I still have it and it's a great cue! I'm currently using a Jacoby and I use it because it's custom made for me.

Big hit difference between the two cues! I like them both but you definitely have to get used to each one.

When you say crack, do you mean a sound of a crack or a visible crack? The Brunswick I had would make a "tick" sound when bumped on the ground, turned out there was a hard plastic washer right underneath the rubber. I'd taken off that rubber a dozen times looking for the noise and never seen that washer until a couple weeks ago. It happened to pull out with the rubber the last time I pulled it off, and I could see the notch in the buttcap that it fit into. I seated the washer into place and tightened the rubber down. Viola, tick gone! I figure it was never seated correctly, and kept the rubber from tightening down completely; creating a gap for it to then move around.
If I had only seen that about five years earlier...:o

I have 3 Pechauer cues in my possession and I can say they play very well. Great value for your money. Direct stiff hit. Purchased from Joe Nielsen. He is a great man. For I did not play a Joss I can't say anything about it. It is said to be that Joss make good cues but I heard the quality has slackened a bit lately.

just an old shooter who's shot with a lot of cues personal opinion. :)

This is quite normal, isn't it? ;) We all have to try to find out which cue suits us best, right? To each man his own (cue). :D

I love me Pecauer, and the one I owned before this one... they both hit the same, I love the hit... the cues look amazing. Very worth the money. I prefer it, personally, over the Joss -- for the hit... but Joss' are nice too.

My Joss Cues

I have about 30 cues that retail from $6,600 down to about $300. For the cash, you have chosen two very nice cue makers to compare. I have owned and played with a Pechauer with great satisfaction. I also have a few Joss cues that play very well. I prefer Joss just because I know Dan Janes and respect him very much. He has done a great deal for our sport and is a Hall of Fame cue maker. Here are my Joss cues. Most of them are for sale except for the COM 60 inch and the Jim Rempe cue.

My two keepers are on the right. My favorites cue design is the third from the left.

i naver played Pechauer cue but im'm happy owner of a Joss.
I played until now with Meucci,Longoni.Alcalde.Bear and Cuetec,i have tryed Predator shafts,both Z&314.And i stick to Joss.This cue offers very stiff shot due to short tapper,high accuracy on long shots and lots of CB control.Deflection is quite high with 13mm shaft but this cue is able to put so much rotation on CB that you dont have to play a lot of side spin to do what you want to do.I have Meucci for the way they hits.Its so soft and unaccurate,yes they have nice desingn but offers nothing more than that for me.I've tryed also 314 with Joss butt but i didnt get that feedback that i have with original Joss shaft.I cant imagine that someone can play with Meucci or Joss same time.
Joss=stiff hit,control,accuracy and great spin.
Meucci=bubble gum :P
longoni=something in betwen
Cuetec=lots of baby powder heh
But its only my opinion

Never hit with a Joss. I am very happy playing with a Pechauer. Started with a Junior series. Now the Pro series. Happy with both cues. I tried Predator and Meucci and always went back to the Pechauer. Pechauer has a lot of wrapless cues which I like. I like to have more wood and I like the way the grip feels on a wrapless cue. Beautiful cues.
