Orcullo and Bustamante in World Cup of Pool

I heard that the Philippines will be represented by the newly-crowned Guinness Tour Stop winner Dennis Orcullo and the great Django Bustamante. Sounds like a great team-up. But it begs the question(s):

1) how come Efren's been absent in a lot of international tournaments lately? Is he semi-retired?

2) Do you think the Orcullo-Bustamante team-up will work? Wouldn't it be better if Orcullo was paired with another young gun, like Pagulayan for instance?

3) Who deserves top billing? Bustamante or Orcullo?

As everyone knows, Efren's getting up there in years. We may have finally reached a period when he's not competing as actively at the top level.

I think Orcullo/Busta would work better than anyone else. Both players have a silent intensity about them. I don't know how an Alex/Orcullo pairing would do. Sure, they're incredible players on their own but I can't see much camaraderie forming during a match. Orcullo has a very quiet, deliberate, unflinching way about him. Alex is jumpy, fun, energetic, and might take Orcullo out of rhythm.

At this point, I still thing Busta should take top billing. Both are having great years, but I think Busta's seniority comes from being a top pro for so long.

Right on the button Steve! Alex's style will Take Dennis out of rhythm.

Good points. I didn't take into consideration the very different personalities of both Orculo and Pagulayan. While they may share similar skill levels and are of roughly the same age, they're polar opposites when it comes to temperament. Good call, Steve! Luckily I'm not their team manager :D

Who DOES decide who a country sends to the World Cup? Or is it the discretion of the organizers? Bandido, would you know?

(who did the philippines send last year, anyway?)

Last year was Efren and Django and they were the defending champions. I'd venture to say that the organizer has the last say on country pairings after consuting with the players that they've nominated.

IF the World Cup of Pool were mixed doubles, ....

...which country would you pick to win (and using which players)?

I'd say the team of Allison Fisher and O'Sullivan (for UK?) would be the team to beat.

(maybe this should be a different thread...)

Might have to go with Iris Ranola / Alex Pagulayan. (note: you can also substitute a slew of names for Pagulayan. So many Filipino men to choose from)
