I recently played a few games with a fellow who has a cue he said he picked up back in the 60's when a couple guys came into town and wound up losing all their money. They needed bus fare home and he gave one of them the bus fare for his cue. We had no idea what the value of it was so I looked in 'The Bluebook of Pool Cues' when I was in a pool room in another town a week or two ago. I confess my age seems to have taken a toll on my memory and the details are a little fuzzy now. I seem to recall the estimated value was based on the number of points and the number of inlays. I'm thinking the book said approximately $1,000 for a cue with eight to twelve points and twenty or so inlays. Then it said if there was a band around the butt of the cue inscribed, 'An Original By Palmer' multiply the value by 100% and if the cue was a pre 1980's vintage add another 50% Since I don't have the book readily available and I have not been able to find an on-line version of it I was hoping someone could refresh my memory on the details. Thanks in advance for any information you can give me on this particular cue.

It says 4-10 points 9-25 inlays 98%cond. $1,000 90% = $475 70%=350
add 100%+ for "original by palmer" on silver foil under clear plastic window (25% more for gold foil) add 50%+ for pre 1980 palmer cues
Hope this helps, are you interested in trading this cue?

Take the second edition blue book, rip out all the pricing pages, tear them into 4" wide sheets and wipe your butt with them. The book is now 5? years old, and cue buying is not what it was when that book was being researched. If you watch the market and Palmers on Ebay like I do, I just saw a model K go for less than 1000.00 on ebay and thats one of the nicest Palmers from the second catalog. Without pics its hard to say, Palmers are really dependant on the model, Szamboti points or not, inlays, custom models, etc..

Joe (--Still believes Palmers are underrated

I can't say whether the fellow would be interested in trading or selling the cue, he isn't a collector but then he doesn't need the money either so I don't know that he would be interested in getting rid of it. What are the criteria used in grading a cue at 98% vs 90% and 70% I will give it a closer look the next time I see it and if possible I may try to get some digital pictures of it. Its been about a month since I saw the guy but I remember the cue looked like it hand't been used much if at all over the years.

When using bluebook...apply common sense

Take the Model I we have on our site...

Original 4 point, Szamboti forearm, 28 inlays, rings, silver palmer foil, cue is about 95% condition.

Base cue - $ 800.00
Palmer foil - $ 800.00
50% pre-1980 (before or after adding foil, and forearm?) $ 400
Szamboti forearm - $850.00

1600, 400, 850.00 $2850.00 - 150 for one shaft $ 2700.00

or

Base cue 800
Palmer foil 800
Szamboti forearm 850

2450.00
add 50% pre 1980 3675.00
-150 for shaft

3425.00

Ok I will take $ 3000 CASH :)
