Are they friends? Yes, definitely. Souquet and Ortmann have been Mosconi Cup teammates many times, and have, therefore, shared some great moments in pool. Adding to that, the close camaraderie of the German and other Eurotour players was in very full view at the World Straight Pool Championships. They stuck together, cheered each other on, and behaved like a family in many ways.
Who is the better player? To me, it's no contest.
In the 9-ball era, I wonder if anybody has a more complete playing resume that Souquet. After all, Ralf has won the World 9-Ball Championship, the Sands Regency 9-ball Championship, the US Open 9-ball Championship, the US Open 14.1 Championship, the BCA Open 9-ball Championship, the Derby City Classic 9-ball Championship, the European Championships and the World Pool Masters. Some of these events, he has won more than once. Obviously, Ralf has won many less prestigious events a, as well.
Ortmann is a fine player with outstanding credentials, but has competed far less frequently against top international fields, and has not won most of the game's most prestigious titles.
In my books, it's time to count Souquet as one of the greatest players of all time.
