Outrunning the Nuts

Is there any better feeling than giving up the nuts and outrunning them?

I am not the smartest gambler in the world and often I will give up too much weight just to get action or to get the bet pumped up. Every so often though I will win the sets where I give up too much weight.

What are your stories like this?

Last night I gave up four going to 11 for 900rmb - about $120 - decent bet here in China and the guy wins the next two before I get on the board so it's 6:0. I win 11:10.

One time I was down two sets at $100 a set and down 5:0 in the third set and very mad at myself. As I was racking I offered to bet $500 from there. The opponent joyfully accepted and broke dry. I ran five racks from there. In the sixth rack I came up dry and he shot a three foot one ball straight into the rubber. I won 7:5. He paid off and quit in disgust.

Once I was playing a guy and he quits two sets winner and I am now HIGHLY pissed off and barking at everyone in the room to play and a guy gets up from the card table and offers to play if I give up 3 on the wire going to 7 for 500 a set - I said BET but you have to freeze up two sets. And then I offered to cover any bets on the rail and could only another 100 a set on the side.

The guy wins the first game and so it's 4:0 - I win the set 7:4 and the next set 7:3. On paper this guy was better than me - played in a higher league - finishes better in tournaments, etc... But honestly I think he was rattled by the fact that a stranger would give him that weight.

Those are three times where I outran the nuts and felt pretty good about it!!

You?

One time while sitting around discussing players, and how good they really played, Tom Haygood (the best player from Bishop,TX) God rest his soul, proclaimed the mighty Earl could not give hiim the 6,7,8, and 9. I was playing sporty back before going into the tourney biz, and promptly told him to get a table.

Needless to say, after about 5-6 hours of play, I busted him. He only missed 4 balls total during the match, but I put him on empty. The wise guys in the pool room finally figured out what I had been telling them for years, 'the spot doesn't matter, whoever runs out the most, WINS'.

Sure it cost me some action, but knowing most pool players, (the ones that played better than poor Tom), all had a go with various spots and I had a few weeks of decent scores.
