Oversized production cues?

I just picked up a pristine McDermott D-9 that needs a little ferrule work, so I decided to check the diameter just below the ferrule. 14.18mm. I checked the top of the joint, .875. The butt cap is 1.30 I have a D-1 that is smaller all around. Whats the story?

Those cues were all different.Its hard to find 2 that you can change shafts between and get a perfect fit.I had 2 identical d-12s and the shaft to joint was a different diameter on both.
