Breaking

Tournaments are about participation. More participation = more payout, and everyone is interested in a bigger payout.

Same with leagues, they are about participation.

If you had ever had a $500 or $1,000 set run out on you, you would not think alternate breaks were that bad. You can't win if you are not in the game. I like to see packs run as much as anyone, except if they are on me.

Didn't Bustamante have a whole set run out on him (by Archer)? What'd he do? Oh, double the bet for the next set. BTW, I think I already proved that not EVERYONE cares about a bigger payout. I also like the fact that pool is one of the few things you can win at without letting your opponent even participate (and vice versa). If you are worried about losing $500 or $1000 without getting a chance to shoot, don't bet it then. It is called GAMBLING, ya know?!

Alternate break is the only way to separate the best from the rest. Roger Federer would never lose if he served every game. Both players get their turn. Baseball, each team bats. Football, you score, you kick to the other team. The best that on that day, in that match, or game will win. Same with every other sport. Each team or individual is given an opportunity to prevail. As it should be, especially in pool. You can get your A kicked 7-1, and not play a bad shot. You should not lose a match by not having played it, amateur or pro. The break isn't necessarily an advantage anyway. But, it does present a better chance for either player to win, if they get that chance, and that's the point.

Johnny9, I think you hit it on the head. In a tournament everyone should have their turn at the table. I think gambling is different and anything can be negotiated before a match. When you're gambling you usually have a chance to eventually put a package together after your opponent. In a tournament you usually don't.
