Yes you read it right.
Pagulayan admitted in a local newspaper here
that he lost to Dennis Orcollo days before the
championship of the WPC.

He lost at around 1 Million Pesos that's
roughly US $ 18k . In a winner’s break,
race-to-25 10-ball format.

It also cites Filipino's propensity of playing money
games in pool.

Here's the link.

Good article. I remember hearing a couple of years ago after winning the Pro tournament in Reno, Alex went over to the Phillipines and played Lee Van(I believe), Lee Van actually spotted Alex something like the last two and relieved him of his winnings.

I wish they would translate the quotes by a couple people that were not in English. What did they say? :)

I would try my best here.
Money matches make better pool players, Orcullo said.

"Makikita mo kasi ‘yung talagang magagaling sa money game dahil puwede kang lumaban hanggang may pera ka," said Orcullo. "Sa tournament kasi lalo na pag knockout, pag minalas ka ng minsan tapos ka na."

Translation on Non-English part:

Money matches make better pool players, Orcullo said.
"You could really see who is the better player in money game because
you could play until you don't have money anymore to play" Orcullo said
"While in tournament specially in knockout games, if you're unlucky
in one instance you will be booted out early."

There is no study yet linking money matches to pool excellence.

But Dr. Naira Orbeta of Philppine Center for Sports Medicine believes that players from Third World countries use money as motivation to excel, which partly explains why money matches are prevalent in the country.

"Parang hindi nga tama, pero that’s how it is," said Orbeta, a sports psychologist.

Lost in translation ?
I hope not Jimmy M.

$18,000 money game with Orcullo

$75,000 final with Chang

I think Alex picked the right match to win.

This would help explain why Alex had $30,000 in debts to pay off.

Sounds like money motivation to me, I wonder if he lost the 18k on purpose....
Lol, maybe he "subconsciously" lost the 18k lol... Kinda like my "subconscious" objection to authority lol...

Thanks,

Jon

I doubt this is the case. I've been gambling at pool a long time and have never seen anyone bet that kind of money without making the parties post the money before hand! Just doesn't happen! I think Alex bought a nice new car a while back, a Lexus or something, I'd bet he's paying off normal bills! Like most gamblers, he could be behind on a bill or two! lol Or he could have a debt to a sports bookie, but I doubt it's from money lost playing pool! JMHO

Didn't he just have a child (well his wife, anyway)? That can be expensive. We just got a bill for a one night stay for a routine gall bladder op that was $15698.28 just for the hospital! Glad I got good insurance!

Frank,

Talking about child did you know that last night (Philippine Time we
are GMT+8 here) on TV Pagulayan admitted that he has a wife here and a boy child. He married a beautiful (yah i will say that again really beautiful :) ) Filipina here and they have a child (boy) and somehow or another
he forgot them when he goes to Canada. And you know that could
be another hole on his pocket. He issued an official statement that he
want to support the child and game him some money but he alledgely told
the media here that the wife does not want to give the child even for
a week.

And by the way the child looks the "little Pixie!" :D
We just never knew they could met one day on Championship in WPC !! :D

Hmm,

The way I heard it the girls father put a gun to Alex's head and told him to pay some cash and get out of the girls life . This was prior to him making a name for himself on the Pro Circuit . From what I understand he has a new chicky in Hiwayi and they are getting married or having a kid ( one or the other :0 )

It may just interest the readers-

Pagulayan's child sired in Manila is named SIMBA.

His child in Hawaii is named NALA.

Of course we all know Pagulayan is also known as the LION.

Get the connection?

I believe Phoebe Choy is the mother of his child in Hawaii. She is a very good pool player too.
