Perhaps it is most popular in the communities with more retired and in the 55 and over developments like my place. Not everyone plays golf I guess, so it's an attractive recreational activity. In my place there is a very active billiard club. It's a group of guys that meet M-F from like noon to 4 PM. They play doubles 8 Ball -one and fifteen in the side. One table is left vacant for walk ins but other than that they take every table. They have a tournament about once a month with the big one being the club championship. The winner gets his name on a perpetual trophy that's in the display case in the room. Never a problem getting a table in the evening. The clubhouse closes at 10 PM though.
But I would guess that over the entire Coachella Valley there are a lot of member only facilities, even if they don't have many tables.
It still strikes me as odd though that in such a big area there is not at least one good pool hall. One would think the population would support it but I guess not or there would probably be one. I'd have thought one or more of the Indian casinos would open one. They could certainly control any gang/drug type activity. But I suppose they figure the game is conducive to gambling and they don't want anything that would attract people from the gaming tables and slots for an activity they wouldn't be getting a taste from. But on the other hand for the same reason it might attract gambling types into the casino that had a room.
