Palmer, Paradise, or ? Please Help Identify

A friend of mine owns this cue and was told that is was a Frank Paradise cue. He believes that Eugene Balner made it while working for Mr. Paradise. I am told this is different than a Palmer cue in that a Palmer shaft will not fit on it. Apparently the piloted part of the shaft will not go into the stainless steel part of the butt. He also stated that this cue is different than any other Palmer in the Catalogs.

Can anyone identify this cue? It would be greatly appreciated.

As Guycrunch says, It's a Palmer model 17 from the 3rd catalog. The joint looks like standard 3rd catalog. Not all Palmer shafts will fit, only the 3rd catalog shafts which has the thinner brass pilot.

It looks like the buttcap on this cue has beed replaced to accommodate a screw in type bumper. The standard Model 17 had a pearlized buttcap. The material was brittle, so it's not unusual to see a replacement made.

As far as the Paradise connection, trust me that cue was made well after Eugene Balner and Frank Paradise had both passed away. The design was made by Peter Balner, Eugene's son, and the cue was built in Palmer's shop in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Paradise joints had a much thinner joint collar and the pilots on the shaft were made of wood.

They are considered variations. Yes, there are many small deviations in design that Palmer used to keep these cues unique. Palmer often mixed designs from various cues. In this case your friend's cue has the ringwork of a Model 16 Palmer.
