Partial Plugging..Can it be done right?

I have an orphan 3/8-10 shaft that has the first 1/3 of the threads stripped. I'm looking to get it back into action as well as looking to experiment. Usually I would just bore it all out and fill with phenolic, etc., etc.

Is there any problem with just boring to the good threads, plugging, drilling, then tapping from there? The only problem I see is not knowing if the threads will line up properly. Is that the only concern here?

Just trying to think outside the box here before I've had my second cup of Java. Depending on your answers, I might have to get back in the box.

Yeh, I'd say he has one chance in 360 to get within one degree of the proper starting place. Why not just drill a little deeper and replace all of the threads?

What about boring and tapping the insert first. Bore the shaft to fit the insert. Then use a 3/8 X 10 rod or pin to seat the insert in the shaft. I would think as soon as the glue got tacky, you would gently remove the pin without turning the insert. I've never tried it, but it looks good on paper.
