Partial shaft collar and insert

When finishing a partial shaft do you do the collar or insert first?

Its for a 5/16-18 cue.

Does it matter what order you do it?

I install the collar first. If the shaft doesn't have a center drilled hole I do that first.
When the collar is installed. I turn everything to size, then do the threads, then I finish the shaft, so I take into account the thickness of the finish when turning down the shaft collar.

I've done it both ways, if your setup is good, it makes no difference.

The only reason I would ever install an insert before cutting the shaft to finished size is if it was a dodgy insert that I didn't trust to go in accurately.

I cut the shaft before installing the collar or insert...

i always install the collar while the shaft is large. Comes out real nice like that , no extra work blending or sanding
