I didn't read the thread so here's my 2 cents.Fundamentals are very important, that's the 1st thing you should check if you're having a bad day on the table. Chances are you're doing something wrong there if you are off (raising up on shots, jerky stroke motion, not followig through, etc.) Make sure the way you play the game is fundamentaly sound and you'll progress quicker.
Practice, practice, practice.................. I like to throw 9 or 10 balls on the table and shoot them in order over and over and over. I also like to play the 9 or 10 ball ghost for good practice when you're by yourself.
Play players that are better than you. You may get your ass kicked, but this is some of the best experience you can get if you really pay attention to the better player while he's at the table.
Gambling and tournaments will help season you to become a better player and it lets you know kinda where you stand when it comes to guaging your level of play against others.
