DP Press Release: Patriot Cup 2005 Coming Soon! Sept 30-Oct 2 at Planet 9-Ball Tampa, FL

DP News:

By popular demand from fans and players, Dragon Promotions is excited to announce the 3rd Annual Patriot Cup!
For the 3rd time, Planet 9-Ball and Tampa FL will play host for the greatest and strongest team event in the USA where giants of the pool world will collide.

The Patriot Cup is a pro team event where pros from the North take on the pros from the South. The teams compete in 9-Ball, Straight Pool, One Pocket, Bank Pool, Breaking Contest, 10 Ball, Doubles, and a 5 on 5 scotch doubles format where all the players from both team come to the table at one time. The first year the South won but the North came back last time and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as they came back from a huge deficit to win the final game.

This year will have some new twists as the addition of one pro woman on each team. Also, there will be some new rookie players in the line up for both teams...soon to be announced!

Past players included the first champions from the South Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Charlie Williams, Tommy Kennedy and Capt Ray Martin.
The defending champions this time are the North Team which last Patriot Cup's North Team comprised of Capt. Allen Hopkins, Rodney Morris, Cory Deuel, Tony Robles, and 2x Patriot Cup MVP Mika Immonen who saved the North last time around.

North 1 win South 1 win
There are already some heavy statements from both sides already as the hearts of the Northern players beat loudly while the muscles of the Southern players start to swell with pride.

Announcement of the players coming soon and new twists of this year’s format. The battle for USA supremacy starts Sept 30. Let the smack talk begin!

You know what we'd REALLY like to see, right? Patriot Cup with countries competing! With the Philippines (with Efren, of course; otherwise, what's the point?) versus Germany versus USA vs. Taiwan vs. the UK (to see if snooker players really are better) vs whatever country has enough good players to form a team!

Pool Olympics

Hell if they dont put pool in the olympics why not just make a pool olympics? 2 fantastic weeks of all countries with teams of 4 men and 1 lady for each country. Let all games be represented. 9 , 8, 1 hole, straight, a break contest, BAnks, maybe a game of pig like in basket ball, set up shots and see what team out shoots the other. one day with a 3 ball contest. MAKE it fun, people will love it, if the dcc grabs that many fans imagine the world of pool all in one place battling out every skill. Which country would grab bragging rights after that greulling test of skill. Maybe if i hit the lotto one day i'll set it up. laffin

I'm happy to see the Patriot Cup occur this year. There's nothing like a little competitive spirit between the North and the South. :p

It looks like the dates of September 30 through October 2nd are the same date as what was previously scheduled as the World Summit of Pool in New York City, which must have been postponed or scheduled for another time.

I would like to know which players are going to be representing each side. D.C. is below the Mason-Dixon line, but I may pull for the North, depending on the who's playing. :p

Looks like fun! :)

Mika Immonen?

Um... remind me again, where in the USA was he born? Can you spell 'ringer'...?

I'm not sure what the qualifications are to represent the North and the South in the Patriot Cup. At one time, though, I think Mika Immonen was living in the Pennsylvania area, about a 10-minute drive from Valley Forge, PA. A few years ago, we went to a Planet Pool pool room which Mika partly owned, which was filled with his championship memorabilia and pictures. Nice pool room, BTW.

WPC Champion Thorsten Hohmann, though currently living in Florida, represents Germany in some pool venues, and in others, he represents the U.S.

Hi JAM. I don't know the exact dates for the World Summit but it's taking place the week before the U.S. Open I think.

Hi, 9 Ball Girl. :) The Carolinas Open is September 6-11, 2005, at Fast Eddie's in Goldsboro, NC. The U.S. Open is September 19-25, 2005.

August is packed with upcoming events: Orlando Open, Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour Season Finale, Big Apple at Master's in NYC, just to name a few.

Sure are lots of happenings that time of year. Kind of nice to see so many great events coming our way!
