i went to my old plumbing supply house to get some 2" pvc pipe for shipping tubes
not that our postal people would ignore the FRAGILE written all over the box
this isnt the normal pvc pipe, it's what is called foam core
it isnt worth a damn for plumbing, but it's lighter than regular pvc and doesnt drive the wieght & cost up the package too much
my cost was only $3.30 for 10 foot
but it's worth it for the peace of mind

standard butt & shaft wrapped in newspaper just fits inside the 2" pipe

I have used the standard thin wall 3 or 4 inch pipe to ship cues in for years. I put that inside of a standard box. They can beat up on the box and the cues still arrive safely. I have not heard of the foam core type you are talking about.

it was something they came up with to be CHEAP
it's two "liners" of pvc with approx. 3/16" of a styrofoam in between
added> chris, it may not be available in all parts of usa
codes and such

I usually use the standard 2" PVC. Doesn't cost much and adds about 3.00 to shipping. Ain't nobody going to bend it either. I purchase 2 shaft 1 butt felt bags to put the cue into then place this in pipe and tape the ends. This then goes into a triangle type of shipping box. I put the shipping address and information on the tube as well as the box in case they ever should get separated. A few months ago I shipped a cue without the pipe and the box was damaged pretty badly although the cue wasn't. Believe me, it is well worth the little extra cost for the piece of mind you get while it is in transfer. You can use a lot less peanuts and such also as the cue in the felt fits snugly inside the pipe and just a piece of news paper on each end securely keeps the tube from moving.
