Pechauer vs Viking

Hi guys,

I'm going to get myself a new high end cue. and I know that I'll stick with the OB1 shaft but I dunno what to choose from.
Money's not an object, but I'd like to know how these cues compare to each other.
A Pechauer ltd 15 "Hollywood" vs Viking's G87 Pool Cue.

I used to own a cheaper Pechauer, great cue but a lil' stiff. How does the Viking compare to that?

Pechauer ten fold. However for 2 grand you can get a really Custom cue from a number of makers. Not a production/custom cue. Ariel Carmeli, Carolina Customs, Jacoby, Darren Hill, Doug Patrick, Lee Pepper, Coker, and the list goes on. So many to choose from.

Just to keep it in mind. Or if you are set on Pechauer you can call them up and speak with Scott Douglas he's a great guy and easy to deal with and you can order a true custom 1 of 1. I almost did this myself but ended up going with Carolina Customs. I also picked up are Carmeli to try out. He's a great cue maker and I know for sure he's making my Next cue when I'm ready.

Good luck hope this helps.

Your advice helps. I have the deepest respect for people like Carmeli. He has some of the finest inlays I have ever seen. But my issue is that I'm looking for a wrapless cue. And I haven't found a Carmeli on display that's wrapless. Any suggestions if I'm looking for a decent wrapless cue?

Theres a wrapless Pechauer on the For Sale forum for much less than $2000. However, for $2000, there are a ton of cue makers that would build you a nice wrapless cue. List is too long to start.. Best of luck

What they said.

If money is not an object, I would definitely go with a custom. That way you get EXACTLY what you want.

I'm sure most any cuemaker out there, would make you a wrapless cue, especially if you're dropping 2 grand.

Thanks guys, you're all right. I could ask a cuemaker to do a custom job. But I selected those cues because, well no disrespect, but I wouldn't know where to start asking what type of cue I'd like it to be. I know I like mostly Bacote, Cocobolo, Ebony and Snakewood. But I have no idea from designs. Has anyone got a good example of wrapless customs?

Also, does Viking have a bad feedback as in the way it plays or is it a lesser quality cue? I don't see many people giving good feedback on Viking Cues.

I also checked out some SouthWest cues, because of their quality, I'm doubting to get one afterall. But What's their official website or how do I contact them?

Thanks

I was talking to a cuemaker who also happens to own a pool hall here. He sells a variety of pool cues there. My friend was looking for a stick and was asking some questions about different sticks. When he asked about vikings the cuemaker said he quite selling them there because he was tired of always fixing them...

Just passing it on.

You can see the message from the Pechauer thread above that I gave. I have a pro series Pechauer and I prefer the 314/2 to the OB1 but I think either would be a performance upgrade to any standard shaft on the current crop of production cues. The echauer and Predator companies have had 2 joint projects and Predator (when I spoke to them) think that the Pechauer butt is a particularly good combination. Someone mentioned $2K. For that money I'd also go with a top notch custom/made to order cue, but if you stick with a Pro series pechauer butt and an OB1 or 314/2 shaft you only have to pay something like $400 to $600 to get a really nice Pechauer cue with either an OB1 or Predator shaft. And the performance will rival any cue available. What you give up in the "hit / feel" area that a $2K custom cue gives you, you'll make up for in performance because of generally higher deflection in any standard shafts. That's why you see many of the top custom cue makers offering the Predator or OB laminated shafts, usually with a $250 up charge and even though their shafts are really high quality.

As far as comparing any Viking with any Pechauer butt....it's no contest, in my opinion....Pechauer is simply a cut above Viking as far as fit-finish- solidity, etc.. My cue is finished very well and you can run your hand up and down the butt from the excellent Pechauer Speed Joint to the end of the butt and you cannot feel anything but smoothness. The costruction, especially the way Pechauer does the A-Join (forearm/handle joint) gives you a one piece feel and the balance is really right where most players like it. My balance point with the 314 shaft is right at 18.75", which eliminates that typical production cue "butt heavy" feel, which can really ruin the way the cue feels....especially in the speed control sensitivity area. Just my opinion, but mostly anyone you ask will tell you that Pechauer is a realcut above Viking. I'd say that the Pechauer is more in line with the industry standard production cue which is Schon. And I'd still prefer the Pechauer as far as the weighting with a laminated premium shaft...including the generally heavier Schons.

I've contacted the general about a Bebot Bautista Custom Cue. So that's probably what I'm getting. I'll update where I got news. Thanks for all the feedback.
