Hey guys, i just got a used schon shaft off ebay and it came with a "phenolic linen ferrule" according to the ad. Its like a light brown root beer color. At first I kind of liked it because it catches your eye, but after playing with it awhile im not so sure, seems as i get tireder its harder to see. I was just curious do they make ferrules like this in other colors, something that would really contrast well with the cueball, like red or something.

They make canvas phenolic in the color you mention and also in black. If it comes in any other colors, I haven't seen it. Good Luck.

I've also seen phenolics in a maroon/red color. Check with a knife parts supplier. They usually have "scales" for handles, but you may be able to find a piece thick enough to turn a ferrule from.

True linen phenolics do not come in white as far as I know.
Even Atlas does not sell it.
The new tan phenolics are much lighter than the old ones.

what is the whitest brightest material you can make a ferrule out of? One of my schon shafts ferrules is super white, when the light hits it right it almost glows. I thought i liked this brown ferrule but if the lights arent nice and bright its a little hard to see im finding.

I think the term "Phenolic" may be incorect when talking about white ferrules. I was told by one manufacture that phenolic resin is dark, there is no such thing as white phenolics. He suggested it may be an epoxy resin.

Ivor-X is the brightest and cleanest ferrule there is today.

phenolic definition

The problem is that you guys are using the term "phenolic" too loosely. This term actually refers to any of the plastics which contain the chemical phenol. Do a quick search on the internet, and you will find that MOST of the plastics we use in cue making are phenolics, while allmost all of them are at least thermosets. There are SEVERAL types of white phenolics, natural, brown, black, and a couple of other colors I've seen. They usually turn out these colors due to the type or resin that the specific thermoset is using.

Hope that this helps!
