Phenolic Tips and you

OK I know this has been hashed out but I recently heard some info that changed my perspective on the issue. I didnt have a strong opinion on weather they should stay or go but personally I didnt care for them because I didnt feel like they gave me enough control of the cue ball on the break.

I was listening to the run out radio program and they were discussing the issue of outlawing phenolic tips and Mark Griffen (at least I think thats who it was) brought up the fact that one of the reasons for banning this product was due to the damage it created on the cue ball. He stated that the phenolic tip was measuring 95-96 on the hardness scale and the cue ball was also running 95-96. If thats so then it only stands to reason that the cue ball will sustain damage from the phenolic tip. Which for me is reason enough to ban this material from tournament play. Not to mention I wouldn't want it used on my own personal equipment.

The flip side to this is if I had a phenolic tip on my break cue or if I sold cues with these tips I would be disappointed to say the least. So whats your opinion on this? Keep phenolic tips even though they can damage the equipment or ban it outright?

First of all nice first post and welcome to the forum. I have a phenolic tip on my jump cue which I love. I can jump with out it but not from as close to the ball. I never like the feel of a phenolic tipped break cue, like you said I felt less control.

Well, balls and phenolic tips register at the same hardness because they are made of the same material: phenolic resin :)

I doubt that phenolic tips damage balls anymore than whatever damage occurs during ball-to-ball contact. Probably less in fact, because a cue shaft is somewhat flexible. Still, balls get chipped by regular play, and some players really play hard.

I personally use a White Diamond sort of tip (not a real White Diamond but something similar). It's hard, but it's not as hard as phenolic resin, it hold chalk a lot better, it jumps fantastic, and it's very usable for breaking with a lot of cueball control.

I don't think phenolic tips should be outlawed because of the potential damage on the balls, but because there are much better tips to jump and break.

50 / 50

I would hate to lose my Jump Cue Phenolic Tip, but I can agree with the Break Cue not using Phenolic Tips.

IMHO Jump Shots are not hit hard like some people Breaks. Therefore I think Phenolic Break Cues should be ban but not Jump Cues. I am not happy with the lack of control on Phenolic tip Break Cues.

Equipment gets used and beaten up. It is meant to be replaced eventually. If phenolic is causing this to happen more often Im okay with that. We used to play with Maces now we use cues. Sports evolve.

I hate this discussion only becouse I hashed this out awhile ago with the BCAPL, I am credited to being the guy or atleast one of a few guys directly responsable for phenolics to still be used on jump cues. Also for the BCAPL revising the phenolic ban even after I was told it WOULDNT happen. Check my older posts if you want more info.

The argument form the BCAPL about cost is a joke. They buy diamond tables which I belive Mark is a huge percentage owner of. Or someone is? They are supplied with aramith balls which after the events they hold are sold over cost and uner retail. They buy these tables with OUR BCA dues. From their company. Then they sell them back to us. LOL and they complain about cost.

I carry a slew of cues all for a purpose. My break jump has two purple heart shafts one with leather and one with phenolic. I use the leather more often then the phenolic. My jump cue (yes I have a b/j and a jump cue) Has leather on one side and white diamond on the other. I also use the leather more often then the phenolic.

Im sorry to those that feal phenolic is cheating but if you want to be good at the sport you play you must stay up to date with the changes and the IMPROVMENTS made available to you as a player.

Alex
