Phenolic tips - no brand differences?

I regret cutting off the Phenolic tip on my break cue when I tried something else. I now went to purchase a new Phenolic tip a find that most all places offer a "non-brand-specific" Phenolic tip. You can buy all the different brand names of leather tips, size, hardness, color, layered, non-layered, etc. However, when you want Phenolic, you get one option.

Am I missing something here?

I bought two from Segberts and they arrived today. Very little material to work with on my lathe. Diameter is fine but not very much meat to get a decent radius on it.

My guess why there's not many brands is cause phenolic is phenolic no-matter what name you put on it.

As far as meat on the bone, it pretty much doesn't wear out so whatever shape you make it, it should be the same for a long time

I’ve already cut phenolic tips down and put on White Diamond, which I think are better

I cut off my Phenolic tip from McDermott and installed a "Bulletproof" tip. Very cool looking, has a lot of feel, but I've found that I make far fewer balls on the break than I did with the tip that came with the cue. I don't know exactly what my McDermott Sledgehammer came with.

Most that offer Phenolic tips buy 9/16" rods and cut them.
Phenolic itself varies.
You want rolled and molded.

I like phenolic on my jump cue but unfortunately my cue ball doesn’t like the chip I put in it so I switched to bulletproof.

Chances are that tip wasn't phenolic but probably g-10 it's harder than the cue ball , which would explain the chipping

G10 is basically glass re-enforced phenolic. Really hard on cueballs. IMO white diamond's are the nuts. plenty of ball speed and can still control it.

Phenolics vary greatly. The prettiest ones are nice for joint rings but horrible for tips as they crack easier and do not hold chalk as well. I feel I use the best out there for tips as it roughs up better and holds chalk and is stronger than most other types.

You are 100% correct. The pretty stuff never crossed my mind

Slightly related, tangent question.

Does anyone know what type of tip is used on the Pedator Air 2 jump cues? Thats the best phenolic tip I’ve ever used. Shape, texture & feel are unlike any other & I’d like to put it on another jump cue I have.

Predator tip products webpage only shows their standard leather Victory tips.

Appreciate it if anyone has any pointers.

Mezz has several different phenolic type tips, they are not made from standard phenolic rod, they hold up really well, in 10 years I have seen one or two that chipped. The Predator phenolic tip that comes as a square, which is what they used on BK3 also holds up well, but grip is pretty poor. Not sure if that tip is available to the public though. White Diamond when installed right is a better tip imo. Piku and Taom is still very popular, they might not be as hard as phenolic, but they offer a bit more grip and chalk retention is slightly better.

i use the hammerhead from outsville. I am happy with it, and their customer service is good if you need to call them.
