Defending champion Alex Pagulayan survived a thrilling hill-hill match against Roland de la Cruz of Cotabato in the opening round (March 26) of the BSCP National Pool Championships.
Antonio Gabica (Asian gold medalist) and Rodolfo Luat (US Open and Derby City Classic runner-up) had similar close shaves in their opening matches. Gabica beat Jerry Pelayo 9-8 in a match where the latter had a solid chance to win it. Luat beat Manolo Tanasas 9-8 after trailing 6-8.
Not as lucky was last year’s runner-up Gandy Valle who went down against Jech Lemen, 8-9.
Other tournament favorites had an easier time hurdling their first-round assignments.
Double-world champion Ronnie Alcano beat Japan-based Ruel Esquillo 9-6.
Money-game king Dennis Orcullo trounced Allan Soliman 9-1.
All-Japan titlist Lee Van Corteza beat back the feisty challenge of Richard Pornelosa 9-5. And rising star Roberto Gomez, winner of the Norway Open, run away from Dondon Razalan 9-4.
