Photos of the 1986 Clyde Childress Tournament

I just finished editing and uploading 55 photos I took 20 years ago at the Clyde Childress Memorial Pool Tournament. They are available for your viewing pleasure at this link: http://billporter.smugmug.com/gallery/1388452

I suggest you try the "slideshow" option by clicking on "Slideshow" in the light colored bar just above the photos. You can set the duration of the photos (the default setting is 3 seconds per photo).

I have not yet labeled the photos, but you might see how many you recognize. I believe Efren had been in this country only a few months at the time of the tournament.

You can purchase prints from the site (Smugmug), but I want you to know that I make nothing from such purchases. Smugmug is simply charging you for the prints.

I hope people who are enjoying your pictures are inspired to take pictures themselves. I used to take a lot of pictures at tournaments had autographs of players programs all kinds of stuff. It all got destroyed in a small flood where it was stored. Although on no real value I was sick about losing them. After my good camera got wrecked at the beach I kind of stopped taking pictures. I am really sorry because there was a lot of opportunities over the years and they would be great to have now. Jam probably has enough to compile a book that would be very interesting. No big seller but would be worth doing at some point for posterity.

You know, after taking photos at this 1986 tournament, I didn't take many pool photos for years. I think my goal back then was to get some of my pool photos published, so when I finally succeeded (Billiards News published the photos I took at the Clyde Childress tourney), I just thought, "OK, now I know I can do that!" And quit! I took some OK photos at the 2005 DCC, but at the 2006 DCC I didn't even carry a camera. The motivation comes and goes....:o

JAM & RichR could pool their pics together and make one heckuva coffee table photo book for us pool fans. ;)

Thanks for the pics Bill.... I first saw Howard Vickery back in 1991 at a tournament in SC and saw him again recently at a Viking Event in OH. From the time your pic was taken in 86 to when I saw him in both 91 & 05, the man has not changed... I think he was born looking like that! :eek:

For me it was a SUPER treat to open the first page and see Toby Sweet at the table playing Chris McDonald, Danny D playing Efren and seeing Bobby Williams too!! Then checking the rest of it out seeing pics of Gary Spaeth playing Wade Crane...and Jay Swanson <RIP>. Incredible...thank you for sharing.

I added comments to some pics and printed some to take to the pool room for tomorrow's tournament.

VooDoo got it right, great treat seeing those players again from 20 years ago.

Hey Steve, maybe you can help me identify two of the players in that set of photos. I labeled the two "Unknown Player" and "Unknown Player2." They appear on Page 3 and Page 4 of the gallery.

Sure does look like the same guy...different shirt but same everything else. I will have to go to the BATCAVE for this info, shine the light if ya need me!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

You know, I thought they were the same guy until I looked at the shirt which a magnifying glass. I think they are different shirts, if not different guys!

I'm scared to go into the batcave....but come nightfall, I guess you will emerge....:cool:
 
All the photos now have captions

I just put captions under all the photos. I was not able to identify two of the players and will appreciate any help on identifying them.:)
 
The picture of young Jose and young Efren is a classic.

They are exactly as I remember seeing them in Houston ca. 1987.

**I would have to bet Unknown player isn't CJ Wiley
**Photo 21 - the person left of the girl in the photo is a very good player from Kentucky - David Rice.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for posting these pictures. They are FANTASTIC! The only person who seems to haven't changed much is Howard Vickery.

It's hard to understand how I could have failed to notice the misspelling of "Childress," but I did! I have changed the ordering of the photos to an alphabetical ordering, so maybe you could tell me the new number for David Rice? And fianlly, I have to admit that I didn't recognize that guy as CJ, but an old friend of mine in Dallas, who knows CJ, said that's who it is. And just this morning, on another forum, some fellow complimented the photos and then said that he and his fiance were in one of the photos. He said that he was just above CJ's head in the photo. So that's two votes for CJ, and no one has really come up with an alternate identification. Thanks for looking so closely!

I think that Howard, at birth, was an older guy with a full beard!:D
 
**Picture #23 - left of girl, in lightweight jacket and striped shirt is David Rice. Looks like you were on your way as a pool photographer. You had the cover and "centerfold" of that issue of The Billiard News! Keep the "old pictures" coming. We really enjoy them.
 
Great photos. Unlike most standard pool photography you have a lot of reaction shots rather than the same old down-on-the-ball pose. It's more interesting and reveals the players personalities.
