Im looking for some pics of a homemade shaft turner/lathe. something like the cue companion. something that someone has made at home in their garage or something.

im just interested in doing something at home. im currently unemployed for a couple months need something to do in my spare time. Dont have alot of money to go out and buy a lathe. Thought it would be fun to put something together and thought someone else might have tried to do the same.

I started putting on tips and polishing shafts with an electric drill. All a lathe does is spin an object. Just think a little bit and adapt something. I know of one man who took a cheap floor model drill press, layed it on it's side and bolted it down to a work bench and in so doing he now has a variable speed lathe.

I used to use a Willard Tip machine to take the tips down. Then I saw my drill and a vise going together to make a poor man's lathe. I used to for shaping tips when I was done with the willard. And I used it for shaft cleaning. It held me through till I got a lathe. Now I use both. I still use the drill set up to clean shafts once in a while, that's about it though. Kind of an odd jig, but it worked for the while I needed it!

Hi Dick,
You must be referring to T. Wayne. I started at a lower level, a hand held that I attached to a bench vise. Gotta start somewhere.

I need to find a cue steady rest like on the back of the porper mini lathe. something adjustable to use on a shaft. i have a pin made from a bolt screwed it into the shaft a little ways and hooked it to a drill, makes a nice cheap spinner, but i need a rest to put the shaft thru so that i can make is a hands free system. The drill has a lock so that you can keep it going without holding the trigger. all the ones i found on ebay had points to hold the object. i dont want anything to damage my shafts. any help appreciated.

for just some basic shaft work i chuck em up in my fishing rod building lathe. got a foot controlled moter and i protect the shafts with the foam we use to build handles on rods as it comes in many inside diameters. the entire rig weighs about 15 pounds and can be broken down to 4 ft.
