Does that little brass pilot on the shaft serve any purpose? I had a flat faced 5/16x14 shaft once that played and felt great. Is it hard to make that piloted insert flat? Thanks for your replies.

Hello Mr. Farr
On some cues where the outer diameter of the brass insert combined with the wood under it will fit very snug against the inner wall of the joint. But in most cases, nothing touches so you could make it a flat face. You just might not like the look of it and think the insert isn't true because you'll see the outer threads of the insert with no head on it. Most inserts have a 1/2" or larger head that sits flush against the bottom of the shaft.
