Piloted Tap?

piloted tap

I use a piloted tap that is slightly small at the pilot. The hole I drill is just over .240 and then I bore to .290. I have a machined .290 pilot on my tap and it works great. It was kinda hit and miss before but much better results with the improved tap. Good Luck.

tap

It is the only type I use for shafts. There are two types I have seen, and the one I prefer is the one with the tapered threads. It is not so aggressive and tends to do a cleaner job. Boring tap hole is a must. All the best, Kent

When you guys talk about boring the hole for the joint pin, what type of boring bar are you using? How deep of a hole are you boring? I have a "micro boring bar", but it is only 2" or so long.

If you are installing self centering pins, and Your bar is too short, then boring for the shoulder part alone may help locate & center the pin alittle better. That is assuming that the bottom was drilled somewhat straight to begin with. I have drilled and tapped for the bottom threads before, and had some luck just using the boring tool for the shoulder part.

I was thinking of a tap Idea that's not only piloted the way the nose is on the tap in that link, but has a shoulder after the threads also to use that shoulder bore for the pin to help center It even more when running the tap through the hole, and might help locate the bottom threads to the shoulder better. Does this sound feasable to anyone, or has anyone ever heard of such a tap? I'm curious if there would be any binding issues. My first thought for this was for use with self centering inserts, and those would'nt be as deep, but seems posible that with as deep as a pin is it may cause the tap to lock up if the fit was'nt a somewhat looser fit, but then that would defeat the purpose If there was too much play.

Just saw it on the atlas site... why is it on clearance? Has it been there for a long time now?

I use a custom tap that has a pilot on it

Hi AZers,

I just thought I'd drop a quick note in about this piloted tap. I had these made for Atlas, but they are not 100% to my spec. I wanted the pilot to be fluted like the rest of the tap to provide relief. If there is any debris after boring, the tap threads that much less deep. Since the pilot is press-fit on, it can not be ground without possibly removing the pilot all together.

Don't get me wrong, this tap still works. The ONLY drawback is that you have to chase the threads with a different 3/8-10 tap. Since you cuemakers have to add an extra operation, we dropped the price.

As these are on "clearance", do you know if another one of these taps will be offered in the future with the fluted pilot?

Hello AZB, the piloted 3/8-10 taps will be ready by the 17th of this month... Sorry for the delay, but these should be amazing taps when we re-stock them. Made in the USA!!!

How about the 3/8-11 ones?
