"Ping" vs "muffled" hits

Not sure if i used the correct term, but is there a performance advantage between these two type of "hits"

for those unfamiliar

Ping... yes it does sort of "ping" when you hit the CB
muffled.. well i guess you know after reading the ping explanation

Note : Crossposted in Ask the Cuemaker section

i dont think theres any advantage, i really think its all a matter of the tip you happen to be using, and possibly how tight you are gripping the cue. I like mine to ping, actually its more of a doink.......it just seems like when im hearing that sound im playing pretty good.

I believe it has something to do with the butt of the cue, as i switched butts and using the same shaft and the "Ping" was gone.

I think the the "Doink" is more of the sound of the tip, specially when using a very hard tip.

maybe I should change the topic to "Ping" vs "muffled" vs "doink" ...lol

I believe it's in the butt...

Some woods are high pitched (like purple heart)
Some woods have lower pitch (like ebony)

If you wanna check yours, I suggest you hang your cue's butt on its own weight & strike it with the back of your finger & listen to it closely

I think the hardness of the tip changes the tone of the shaft, I noticed it when I changed my soft tip to a harder one

Personally, I like the high pitch with good feedback/vibration, the kind that can be used in great-playing musical instruments... unfortunately, some cue makers MUFFLE this sweet sound, and feedback for that matter, intentionally:(

Um, yeah, thanks!@#

I like the awful cracking noise that mine gives off when I hit the cue ball. 'Tis an awful noise.

I prefer the muffled sound. Tim Scruggs cues have a solid "thud" to them that feels great. So do Gilberts. Changing the tip doesn't seem to matter either, they still have that deeper quiet sound.

I've got 2 314-2s. One with and everest tip that pings, and the other with a sniper doesn't have the same sound.

This weekend I was watching Charlie Bryant play and on his break his cue made a normal noise as the cue hit the cue ball but then it made this horrible cracking noise like he was shattering his break cue. It was awesome. Sounded almost like lightening.

I've been trying to reproduce it myself but my break cue is fiberglass and I was getting closer and closer but I was also burning layers of skin off of my thumb-knuckle. Eventually it was too painful to make a proper bridge. Moral: Find my glove *endrant*

I much prefer the muffled sound. The cue I was using for about four months had the ping and I found it unnerving. It's almost like I could feel the vibration in my hand and it didn't "feel" like a solid hit. My newer cue is muffled and I find it much more comfortable. Just preference I guess.

Too often my cue makes a sound shortly after contact which resembles "Oh sheeit that's gonna miss!".......or maybe that sound's coming from somewhere else?:o

hmm what cue are you using ? we must have the same model !!!
:D :) :D
