Pique and masse shots

I pretty much know masse shots but how do pique shots differ? I watched some on You Tube but still do not understand when you would one vs the other.

I think a pique shot is an elevated stoke shoot when you strike a cueball, say if you are very close it to and want to draw it, you hit it basically from above so you don't double-hit. A masse is when you do a curve around a ball, or curve the cueball in general. I guess you can think of a pique as a masse type shot that hits the cueball and object ball at close range instead of a masse shot that curves the cueball down table, usually around a ball.

pique used alot in straight rail balkline etc, as the name give away its a jab, for when theres no space for regular stroke, i use it in pool when needed

I've heard it used two ways:
- a "swoop" stroke with max tip offset to get the tip out of the way and avoid double hits when the CB is too close to the OB
- an elevated, usually softer, draw shot for maximum draw angle steepness

Don't know for sure which (if either) is correct. Also not sure of the spelling.

Piqué in general means more backspin than curve compared to a massé shot, but the elevations may be similar. It has nothing to do with how close the OB is. At the "small" carom games many piqué shots are ball-to-ball draw shots and the elevation is used to keep speed off the cue ball and first object ball. Watch some balkline and you will frequently see the players use 45 to 60 degree elevation for such shots.

The first account I saw described a yo-yo type shot so that's what I go with. Contrary to that depiction, it does require a vertical masse.

in french, a 'piqué' is a draw done with an elevated cue = a 'massé' without curve, just draw.

this kind of shot is mostly used in the small games -straight rail, balkline-

nota : most 'piqué' look like a draw , but there is a kind of 'piqué' which requires side spin , called 'piqué rentrant' in french . dunno if there is a proper translation in english.

I play some straight rail on shooters pool and some carom players said it is elevated shot from your neck level. Masse is from ear level. So i believe it is swerve shot in french.
