John was a great guy first, then a great player. He was quite a character as he lumbered around the table. Wheezing out various comical statements including the famous "Arrrgh, salty dog". Walking into one pocket event with was like walking in with a rock star. They all knew John. And the story of how he took 75 cents into ring game and ended up in a bathtub full of money in Detroit back in the '60s. I learned a lot from John. It would have been nice to learn more. Cancer took him. I remembe the fun we had.

I met John at the rack back in the middle sixties and he always said hello and we talked alittle while he was waiting to see if their was a game he could make. Its funny that the only to players with state/city nick names were california John or Pittsburgh John. Both guys were charactors and I got learn some really great games other than 9 ball. RIP Big Guy!

Saw John a lot at Breakers in the early 1990s, usually in just a tank top undershirt laboring around that table like Fred Sanford. I too heard the story about him winning a ton of money.

Pitts….playing one hole at the Rack….in a trap….sez “The trouble with this game is you gotta take your turn…if it was poker, I’d pass.”
