Places to play in Philly

i never said anything about the color of people there... i said from what i knew of it it was a pretty rowdy place from what i remember...

first of all i am part of a minority and would never discriminate

It never ceases to amaze me how something you wrote grew legs and became something you never intended to say nor implied.

By the way, I said Hi to Jose at the Green place and told him you recommended that pool hall. It was enjoyable playing there.

Did you feel like the Tacony room was safe?

Tacony has always been a safe place for me. Granted, I know Tony and the housemen behind the desk and some of the players there, but I have never felt unsafe there, ever. Even leaving my cue on the table while I went to the bathroom, it was cool. And I play on the Black Crowns, not back in the *bangers* section. All the BC's are shimmed, two more than the others for 1P players not wanting to play on the shimmed Diamond Pros. Those tables are brutal!!

If you go there with respect to the regulars that play there, they will respect you in turn. As a woman, I never went in there with an attitude or a title to defend. However, I haven't been there since it turned over in ownership, so I can't say what's going down now. But it was THE room to go and play and watch others! Still is, as far as I'm concerned.

I was told to never go to Boulevard Billiards without an escort, and to never take my "good cue" there. There was a shooting there and I just don't get around much to want to experience a place like that.

Granted, everyone has certain preferences that would make them feel comfortable. No one can change that.

but while no specific reference to color might have been made, you can't fault people for voicing their opinion when someone puts a big KNOCK on a business based on mostly a hearsay opinion. When that business doesn't particularly deserve it.
My rant on color is just that. MY rant because of the opinions that i have.

I have been to most of the pool halls in the city, and despite some bad experiences at some, i will not come on here and badmouth them on a public forum. Things that were said earlier could have been said in a much more TACTFUL manner.

If you were going to voice your concerns, it would have been better to express them in a PM, and not publicly slander an establishment, especially since you haven't been there in a while, and don't know what it is like.

I felt safe in there. I also know my way around, know how to handle myself, know how to speak with just about anybody and make a friend in the process, and so on.

My comment about having some Soprano types with me was made in jest, although since I don't know anybody in there, it's never wise to go into a bar, or a poolhall full of players, as Tacony is, without at least one friend. If for no other reason but that it could well happen that if you match up with someone and they get belligerent, or start shouting and yelling, or run at you, or spit at you, etc. etc., it's good to have a friend at your side.

I've seen my share of stuff before, and could tell a few stories about how things can turn ugly really fast. It's in those moments that either being known by the players, or being friends with the owner, and so on, can come in really handy.

If I were to be in Philly a lot, and were to frequent the place a lot, and make friends, and play in their tournaments, and so on, that would certainly help.

But I was obviously from somewhere else, and certainly wasn't hiding whatever slow speed I have, and that helped create the atmosphere where the woofing began. By the way, I loved it :D

Would I want my mother going there? Nopers...

Just to say, SUPERSTAR knows everywhere and every place to play around in at least a 100-mile vicinity of Philly and can attest to the conditions. I will vouch for SUPERSTAR's personal assessment, not that SUPERSTAR needs my endorsement.
