Played one of the top 5 best players in the world

Same story but...

About 8yrs ago I was still living in Aiken,SC. I wasn't very good but good enough to make money off the regulars.

There was a group of Mexican guys that played there and gambled all the time but none of them would play me.

One day they had and older Mexican gentleman playing with them. They approached me and asked if I wanted to join them. To my surprise I said "of course!"

I beat 2 of them while the old guy just watched. Then it was his turn. I ran a few balls and then turned the table over. He made a few balls and BOOM! He made a carom combination eight ball?!? I win but I feel terribly uneasy. He tells me the same story "he beat himself". I agree. Then we play again same thing except he caroms the eight ball perfectly I mean the eight was at least 2 feet from a pocket. I still don't like it. Then he tells me he's one of the top players I've ever seen.

He says he wants to freeze up 1k. Luckily for me I'm always aware of true skill when I see it. His stroke was a thing of beauty. Never seen one like it and for those who know him, they will agree. Plus Danny Basivich used to visit town and told me that was a way he hustled by claiming he's the best u'll ever see. And play poorly.

I called up some some friends and they informed me that I'm lucky. Take that money and run. Turns out I was up against "The Mexican" or "mago" as he called these days. He's been a close friend since then. Beating me for hamburgers, lunches, dinners, etc.

Wow, very similar story, only my guy is no great. so much in fact that i told him my father use to run the table on 8 ball on a regular. he told me thats hard to believe. he said he was a 5. meaning he usually knocks down 5 balss per shot.
wells shit, here and there i run the whole table. 5 shots in a row is simple for me as long as the break spreads the balls around ok. no biggie.

if i rate myself 1-10 i rate myself a 4. My father was def a 9. i would say a 10 is someone who can run the table 10 times in a row in 8 ball.
the thing about me is, the better my competition the better i play. i can play a 6 and i will play at 6 level.

Nice story BTW. would def like to hear more

well "mago" is definitely one of the best players in the world. For many a years he beat everyone on the east coast for the cash.

His game is truely a pleasure to watch. His break is not much but the way he moves and puts "pro" players in tight spots is amusing.

His safety game is tops in my book. i've never seen a guy take so many "pro" players out of their game by just playing relentless safes.

Most pros try to take you out of the game by keeping you planted in your seat. He lets you to the table so you can see the dissappointment of not having a shot. sometimes i wonder whats worse lol obviously not coming to the table, but seeing a different style is always awesome!!

Nice. I always admire pure cash players over pro players.

Just goes to show you that the best at any sport are not always playing it professionally.
