Player Break Rules

In the new revisions of the WPA rules, they made it clear that a player can take their break at between any racks (regardless of who’s break is next). Apologies if this has been discussed before, but what is the thinking behind that change.

I much prefer the old practice that you can only take a break when it’s your “turn”. I don’t like a player being able to ice someone on a run (eg Shane running a package).

I'm fine with it. That's the way people play outside of the WPA anyway. When you get to that level you should be use to it and the intentional icers.

I’m usually not impressed with how the WPA does things….I’m still not.

I much prefer the way they do it at snooker. You can take a break after any frame and if you really have to go in the middle of a frame, that's OK too. On the other hand, I think a player should only be allowed a break so they can go to the bathroom or solve an easy equipment problem. I consider taking a break to "ice" your opponent unsportsmanlike.

when you get to be an old fart like me, you take a break when Mother Nature tugs on your bladder, any hour of the day or night.

I got a prostate like a cue ball, take Flo-Max and still get surprised DAILY, sometimes I make it, sometimes I don't. Call me pee-pee pants. I'd wear Depends, but they don't make them in my size!!!

You might want to consider us old guys (especially us with urology issues) where the urge to pee comes one very fast and if we can't go pretty soon, we end up peeing on the carpet where we stand because it is physically impossible to hold it any longer.

My chair is like 15 feet from the toilet, and sometimes I don't make it, because the mere act of getting up out of the chair triggers the urination. Oh, the golden years are SO much fun, and in about 30 minutes I will be a year older....78.

In snooker they also have planned intervals during a match of any length. Like after 4 frames (regardless of the score) there is a 15 minute break. I like this approach (they recently did this at the Canadian 8b and/or 10b, the break was supposed to be after a certain number of games).

I should note that in snooker there has been concern expressed that players do leave between frames ostensibly to go to the bathroom but may not (I’m not sure what the real harm is there as they have a commercial break between frames anyway).

I agree that a quick bathroom break should be available when needed (although having bathrooms available close and not occupied can be an issue).

If you don’t have a designated break, I still like a player having the right to take a break to compose themselves, but that should only apply (IMO) if it’s that player’s turn. So I can take a time out when it’s my turn to break, not in the middle of your package.

Why, though? Aside from a quick bathroom break, why do I need to take a break until it’s actually my turn to play?

why not. they let players study a shot for minutes and then the same for the next. why should you have to hold it for someone ruining the game .
let the t.d give you permission as he can decide if you are making a move or not.
most pros know each other and are friendly. and know who shoots angles and who is legit.

it can work both ways one player sees the next needs to go so he stalls forever during his turn.

punish those ruining the game or shooting angles or are just bad for the tournament.
