I need advice on whether or not to switch from right-handed playing to left-handed. I have played a little over the years, but I was never any good. I recently bought a table and am trying to get better. However, I just learned that I'm left eye dominant. Should I switch to playing left handed now? Believe me, I don't have any game to lose right-handed. I'm just wondering if I would be better off in the long run. BTW, I'm 36.
Thanks

Many of the guys I play with can shoot both ways, I am left handed and I shoot that way, but when neccesary I do shoot like a righty, although I am not very good at this. In my opinion take two hours on two seperate days and for the first two hours play as a righty, then wait a day and play the second time as a lefty. See which is more comfortable, because ultimately this is the way that you should choose.

Several schools of thought on this. Know anything about baseball. All the best hitters are opposite handed as eyed. It puts your best eye closer to the target. On the other hand is pool more like that or is it more like shooting a rifle where you must use the same eye as handed.

Mike Sigel is a right-handed person who shoots lefty, if I'm not mistaken. And most would say he hits 'em pretty sporty. It all comes down to your body mechanics, I think. If you can stroke with your left hand with your left eye over the cue and feel more comfortable that way, than that's probably the way to go. If, however, your stance is such that you can comfortably shoot right-handed with your left eye over the cue, then you may find that more comfortable than switching hands.

I think the only way to really figure it out is a qualified instructor, who can look at your mechanics, and try out some different things with you, and see what works best for you. You can learn ABOUT mechanics on an internet forum, but you can't learn YOUR mechanics on an internet forum. You need a pair of eyes besides your own, paired with a good deal of pool and physiology knowledge, to help you in person.

I am left eye dominant and I shoot right handed. I think you should stay shooting with your right hand. The pool stroke requires good coordination and if you usually use your right hand for most tasks it will be the more natural way to shoot. Your dominant eye will automatically find a comfortable position over your cue to aim.

The only activity I switch to being left handed is when using firearms. When shooting a rifle or shotgun you can't easily use your dominant eye while shooting from the opposite shoulder.

I would practice both ways and see which way you start to feel more comfortable with...it's a good idea to learn to play both ways to reach shots without having to resort to a bridge...

No. Keep your chin over the cue and you'll do fine.
