playing at a place you dont like

have you ever played better at a place you dont like vs a place you do like ?

our tue night travel team decided to change to an in house team at a new sports bar. i really dont care for the place but i am playing some of my best pool there. i have won the last 5 in a row , some quite handidly against players who i have had a hard time beating before.

maybe i should start hating every place i play at. :grin-square:
 
i should say this place has fairly new valleys . they play fairly close to the diamonds i played on at the single regionals in nashville.

no they dont play exactly like diamonds but they play a lot better than the old valleys i have been playing on most of my life, being an old bar banger.

the only ones that i have ever seen that will take bills and give you credits like arcade games do.
 
Maybe because you don't care for the place the table is the only portion of that place that feels like home or where you're comfortable. Because you don't like the surrounding environment you're able to focus a little better on the table? No distractions. Just a thought.
Or perhaps it's the change of seasons. I know my game improves as the weather gets better and warmer

i think you are right on the 1st thought abd i know you are right on the 2nd one come to think of it.

this lace is quiet as a mouse for the most part. no distractions at all mostly.

as for the change of seasons you dont know how right you are. i have nerve damage in my right hand" 35% disability". when it is cold my hand aches worse than a bad toothache. even in the summertime if the ac is set low i wear a bandage to keep it warm, sometimes it get to adhin so bad i go to the bathroom and run hot water over it to warm it up before i play.

sometimes when it feels good i play like a 7, when it aches i play like a 3 lol.
last summer i went up to a 6, when it started getting cold i came back down to a 5. it oughta be feeling pretty good when the cities come up in june. i seem to play my best then.

in that case, i hate pro events. :mad:
 
The place I played at tonight has Valleys that have swamps for cloth. You have to hit medium speed for slow shots. I don't like the layout either.

And to boot I played a guy who literally took 4-5 minutes on each shot. He was trying to plan the whole rack out from each shot.

Took 25-30 minutes PER rack. And he lost to boot.

So I guess you play better at places you hate, as I always seem to play better at the ones I hate as well :cool:

i would like to think i am playing better lately. :thumbup:

i can see where you can come up with that assumption since i did not go into detail. i play in 3 different leagues 5 times a week , 4 at the pool hall and 1 at the sports bar.


lets just compare apples to apples here. apa league.

sun night 8 ball at the poolhall. record is 2-6. last 2 weeks i faced 2- 5's. both times i was up 3-0 and lost 3-4.

tue night 8 ball at the sports bar. record is 6-1. last 2 weeks i faced 2- 5's. won one match 4-0 and the other 4-1.

i just posted the matches of the last 2 weeks because it is still fresh in my memory. fwiw i have faced a few opponents at both places and won at the sports bar and lost at the pool hall. i dont know if that makes a difference or not.

on a side note i have been playing lights out on my bcapl format money league at the pool hall on wed night. i scored a 43 out of a possible 45 last night. only match i lost i was shooting off handed at the 8 , overcut it trying to thread thru 2 of my opponents ball and i hit the tip of the corner pocket leaving a hanger. he run his 7 balls and then pocketed the 8.:(
 
Back when I shot apa my first team played out of the city. 8 times out of ten it was a place I didnt like, including my home bar.

Few years later I joined a team in the County. Ended up basically being the same thing.

Little while after that I joined an in house division where there was no travel. It was OK at best... mildly acceptable.

Then another short while after that I went to another in house division that had league on 9ft gc3s. This was perfect. The tables were in great shape and they used Simonis and Cents. The venue kinda sucked as the food was over priced and so were the drinks if you drank there and the service was horrible., but the tables were good.

That place closed up and we went back to the mildly ok place. after 2 sessions I quit league and now I only place at locations of my choice in Tournies and stuff.

Joining a pool league was one of the 2 best choices I ever made to improve my pool game. Quitting pool league was the other.

Give the place a chance maybe you will learn to like it

Yes there are some places where I just don't feel right. If the tables are set up North to South...I play better. But when the tables are East to West, it just doesn't feel right.
 
There's a bar I don't like much ... but it won't be a problem for a while ... their roof collapsed last week due to the snow load.
