Playing Defence ????

Ok tonight After leagues I was playing on a different table with a guy I know and we were playing 8-ball , Now I only had the 2 ball left but I was blocked by two of his striped balls so I played defence , I made a legal shot by just thinning the 2 ball in to the cusion .

Now once I did this he tried to make one of his stripes and scratched , so I did the same thing again but tried to bump the 2 into his ball out fare enough so if I got ball in hand again I'd still have a shot but still snooker him .

Well Finally I got ball in hand and tried to make the shot on the 2 well I missed with just a 1/4 inch and he had perfect shape to run the rest of his balls so I just gave him the game .

Well After the game he got up in my face and said that he didn't like how many defence shot I made and he don't like to play the hide and seek game .

What should i do different next time , One of my good friends that is a really good player said that I played it as I should have and that I did everything right .

Play to win

Seems like you're listening to the enemy camp.
He's your opponent,not your coach.
PLAY TO WIN THE BEST WAY YOU KNOW HOW
If he quits, breaks his cue and goes home to kick his dog,
that's his problem.

I try to not play outside pool rooms...A couple weekends ago I ran a rack of 8-ball on some drunk guy and just before I got down on the 8 he walked past me and said "nice game" so I just whacked at the 8 because he forfeited the game at that point. However, he turned around and raised hell repeating "you still have to make the 8!!!" a million times and kept going on and on about it for literally a half hour as if he wanted me to get mad so he could fight someone. I play offensively at bars because of people like that and your situation. Cant go wrong with 'honest attempt' when you're just playing for shits and giggles. edit: unless of course you keep running out... that pisses people off too sometimes.

If you could get a dollar for each time the losing player attributes his/her loss to anything but him/her playing bad, one would be a very rich person.

Pool is both an offensive and defensive game, like almost every other game out there. Learn both offense and defense, and play both offense and defense. If it offends other players, that's their problem. The ones that are usually offended don't have the brains or insight to play defense and are usually embarrassed when they try to play defense.

There is no right or wrong way to play this game. Defense can be every bit as valuable a weapon as offense, sometime much more valuable.

I agree with all the existing advice on here: continue to play your game the way you want to, and don't worry about what your opponent thinks. If he doesn't like to play you, he won't, but you shouldn't change in order to please him. Would he change to please you?

yeah!!! tell him to go play....soccer, football, basketball, hockey, table tennis, etc... where they don't play defence:rolleyes:

One of the many reasons I gave up 8 ball years and years ago was people like you have described. 8 ball was never and I mean never played by the players where I hung out. 8 ball is primarily a bar table game and with it comes the attitude and the ignorance.
You played the game as any good player would have played it. People who don't play safe as you did don't understand it and will complain about it to the point of violence, sometimes.

Thanks everyone , I'll tell yea this guy was so pissed he could have spit nails , but like my friend Tom said I did everything I was supposed to . Defence wins more games , plane and simple .

I'll probably run into this guy tonight when I go but I could care less , because in the end I know I'm the better player and more well mannered .

You did the right thing and if nothing else remember this, NEVER ARGUE WITH A FOOL BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE. Now if he looks like he is going to start something clock him first because its better to be a fast starter than a slow finisher.

It's going to sound funny but I'm not a fighter what so ever . I'll stick to defence and enjoy doing it .
