Playing for Money Where You Live, What's It Like?

i agree but i was thinking mainly about those who are offended when even asked at all. especially when they think they're pretty good to begin with...and then offer to "challenge" em?

"how dare you expose my weak game?"

Too true. I can only name two or three guys in town who can play their best game for free. I'm certainly not one of them. Around here there is a small percentage of good players who do not gamble and a small percentage of bad players who do. I believe it is more about ego than the money. Hey nits of the world, we're not out to get your money as much as out to make a game worthy of our full attention.
It used to be that if you wanted to play one of the best players, you had to spend some money. I was always ok with that. I just considered it paying my dues. Those good players would offer a spot they felt they could outrun, and I'd try the game. I learned alot watching the best players run out rack after rack and occasionally I'd get a set or two, break even or win a few bucks, and feel some accomplishment -and maybe a little pride too.
BTW If anyone is in the south Chicago burbs and would like to play some sets of 8bal, 9ball, or straight pool, let me know. It will have to be arranged well in advance though since we're on mandatory OT at my work right now.

Table Time

When I was in college in the mid 80's my friends and I would just play for table time. It was nice to be able to play for a few hours and it didn't cost you anything.

The problem with pool say over poker is, pool is almost as decisive as a foot race. In short order it becomes obvious who will win. Since few players who "Claim" they like to gamble actually will ever give a spot to produce a fair game, gambling play happens rarely and usually doesn't lasts long. The so called gamblers are mostly just hit and run nits regardless how they may portray themselves.

It is funny, you will see more real gambling with lesser players among themselves. Meantime the stronger players are always looking to lock it up and never want to play each other. God forbid they should even book a loser.

Your post has more depth and validity than most will ever come to believe or understand.

Also, I have noticed that when the bet "gets right", meaning when it is totally in favor of the big bettors, they will pull out the mega bucks and send people to the hospital getting the bet cofirmed. Otherwise, the big bettors sit on their hands when they have an even game. That's been my observation.

We've had a lot of road players passing through New Orleans in recent months. One of them rather well talented was giving me a large spot. I played him for $30-$40 a game and broke even with him each of two times that we played, all the while him asking me to raise the bet. I knew I had a tough game so I kept the bet the same. Finally, he asks me to play a third time and we play for $40 a game and after four hours we break even again and he quits. Now, practically every time he sees me, he asks me to play but now he wants to lower the spot. :slap:
