Playing pool with a carom-cue?

As a caromplayer I want to play 9ball sometimes and maybe even play matches in the future.

I only have caromcues for three cushion. 520 grams maximum weight. Heavier I don't like.

I know there is a difference between pool- and caromcues like more or less deflection and so.

For a beginner like me, starting with a caromcue playing pool will not be a problem or is it better to start good and buy me a poolcue?

(Sorry for some grammatical mistakes in this thread, I am Dutch ☺.)

dont worry
you can play pool with a carom cue
the shafts taper (conical) is different than most pool cues (pro taper) and is stiffer and thinner than most commonly used pool cues
but it should not inhibit your ability to play

Great question!
I have seen others play in league for BCA and APA at my home room with a Carom Cue and they do quite well. I really do not see any real difference that would make it harder for someone shooting with a Carom Cue. I myself use a pocket billiard cue that is around 17.5 ounces and has a Z-Shaft, which is a conical taper and smaller tip.

Good Luck!

I've done it the other way round, playing Carom (but not 3C) with my 12,75mm LD pool cue. What a blast, I was fine with the basics and also rather successful in 5 ball.

It comes down to the tip sizes. You'll have problems with long balls with force on a very small and soft tipped carom cue. 9 ball does require force occasionally, not uncommon to 3C but with more precision (you have a ball to pocket) and try for shape afterwards.

Also pool tables are not that precise in their reaction as the Carom ones are, so you might want to try a little bigger tip that is more forgiving here. 12mm is very fine, the 11,75mm are here to stay for the pros.

You might also look at infos regardng Chinese 8 ball, too. Some are using Snooker/Pool hybrids.

Cheers,

I do it, works better for me I've gotten very comfortable with the shorter stiffer thicker and lighter carom cue, much cue for 3c, stiff cue with a kamui clear medium

You can play the cue.

There is another option though. You could consider getting a pool shaft for your carom cue. Depending on your joint they may be available "off the shelf".

My carom cue is 18 ounces....11.5 mm tip.
It can handle all the shots on a pool table...
...but I rarely use it for pool...
...the disadvantage is that is 55 inches long...you tend to have more awkward positions
playing pool....where you need a longer cue.
