poker vs. pool

I can't believe no one has started a poker channel.

They have - it's called the Travel Channel. :-)

I personally think that poker has run it's course as a fad. Of course there are millions more poker fiends online and in real life now and that will continue for a decade to come.

I doubt very much that poker is still attracting people at the rate it was going two years ago.

We deal with a lot of online stores and the ones who sell poker supplies tell us the bubble has popped on poker and sales have fallen considerably and leveled off.

I think that in general poker hasn't overtaken pool for the normal "wanna have a good time doing something crowd" nor for the league players. It has taken some gamblers out of circulation for the same reason that the IPT has allure. The chance to win huge money for a relatively small investment compared to the prize fund. Traditionally, the gamblers in pool are the ones who spend the least in the pool room and take up the most resources.

Pool will always be able to fade it. The allure of spinning and disappearing spheres is something that is a lifelong fascination. It is a universe of it's own with the player at the table attempting to control it. The brief times that we do are when we are in dead stroke and that is the high you can't buy.

A new casino opens up and all of the gamblers in your town leave the only other gambling establishment (pool room) to go to the new casino and poker itself is responsible? You also mention that half of your customers got a better paying job in the casino. Pool was obviously not profitable enough to pay the bills. casino gambling itself along with playing poker is a much more easier way to make or lose money than sitting a pool room for hours on end hoping some weak player comes in to dump his money to a skilled pool player. Gambling takes more mental talent and lots of luck than physical skill compared to pool which takes both. So its not poker itself per se that diminished your business, it is the casino and gambling in general that puts pool out of business...

Good point you make, and it's not worth arguing, but yes, poker almost directly was the cause. The employees that left to go to the casino went to be POKER dealers. The players that left play poker exclusively. I play poker, so I get to see it all first hand. VERY few are into the slots. Additionally, my case is proven on the simple fact that the indian casinos have always been in Tulsa with Slots and Blackjack. Nothing changed in the pool room until the POKER got legal and started in casinos last year.
