Formica countertops are made from multiple layers of paper, including:
- Kraft paper: The base layer that's saturated with phenolic resin to give it strength and rigidity
- Decorative paper: A single layer of paper that gives the countertop its color and pattern
- Protective overlay: A transparent overlay, usually made from melamine resin, that protects the surface from scratches and stain
The process for making Formica countertops includes:
- Saturating sheets of kraft paper with melamine resin
- Pressing the resin-soaked paper together under high heat
- Placing decorative paper on top and curing it in an oven
- Gluing the laminate sheets to particle board
Formica countertops are available in many colors, patterns, and styles, and can look like granite, quartz, and marble. They can be cleaned with soap and water, but abrasive cleaners can scratch them.
