What is the purpose of the polka dot cue balls and has anyone here played with one and if so, what do you think of them?

I got to hit around with them at last year's US Open. They play about the same as the red circle ball.

The purpose of the multi dots is for the camera to pick up the spin on the cue ball while being filmed.

While I was watching the Efren vrs. Busty TV match, both players seems very comfortable putting spin on almost every shot. Even the 9 ball shots had some spin.

Hi Gerald,

I played a match at the DCC on the TV table with the "polka dot" cue ball. I noticed no difference from the regular red dot in use on all other tables. I imagine it would make it much easier for a commentator to explain cue ball motion to a viewing audience. If you get a chance, review one of the matches from the DCC on the Billiard Channel. That may explain it nicely.

i haven't played with one yet, but i prefer watching them on television. if you watch carfully, when someone plays a stop shot, you could see the dots spinning backwards, and then right before it contacts the object ball, it's about to roll foward!!! very cool and educational.
