I recently bought a centennial that was refinished with lacquer on the rails. The head rail now has a number of scuff marks on it due to breaking and I plan to have Mark Gregory refinish the rails. He has suggested applying a polyester finish which he says is very durable and should hold up better than the lacquer. My fear is that the polyester scuffs and I'm left in another position of having the rails redone again in a few years. The refinish isn't inexpensive and I've considered returning the table to its original tung oil finish, but I love the look of the high gloss finish-the rosewood looks amazing. I'm curious if any cuemakers here have experience with polyester and might be able to offer me some guidance in this situation.
The table is a home table and isn't played upon heavily (3-4 times per week). I do have two young children and have been wondering how the rails will hold up when small cars and trains are run across them when I'm not around?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
