Pool: A Losing Game

Andy,

" bizarre ban on billiards

Tashkent, UZBEKISTAN, Oct, 16, 2002 _ There have been some strange laws passed in the dubious democracies of Central Asia-- neighboring Turkmenistan banned ballet and opera. But Uzbekistan's decision to ban pool playing, or billards, has infuriated its fans, who were thrilled their favorite pastime recently elevated to an Olympic sport. The ban has been in place for a number of weeks, but no one knows which government department made the decision.
The Tashkent local government press service says the crackdown came after billiard clubs systematically flouted a 1998 city regulation, which requires all entertainment establishments to close by midnight. "Many stayed open until dawn, and several also sold alcohol without a licence. Drugs were sold in a number, and there were often fights and brawls, so the decision was made to close the clubs to lower the crime rate,' said city administration press secretary Dilshod Nazirov. But its not clear why a ban in the capital city got extended to the rest of the country."

Actually it's not an Olympic sport. Maybe they meant the World Games

That's cool that you have a follow-up article. I actually have the original one where they said that they have just banned the game. I'll try to find it when I get home tonight and post the exact text tomorrow.

Thanks

Andy

There was also something in Billiards Digest about a year ago...maybe two, talking about a town in Mississippi that had outlawed pool for the same reasons. The law had been made so long ago that the people in office didn't know about it. They found out when someone that new the law brought it to the mayors attention since he had a pool table in his house. The town had also been holding a pretty good tournament. I'm pretty sure they went ahead and had no problem changing the law.

I agree with those of you saying that they need to step foot in a pool room not a bar with a couple tables. They will see the difference then.

Joe....now you get to stay close to home. You won't get to beat up on the road players that come through :)
