Pool Ball Collecting.

So there is no general consensus that these were ever intended to be billiards balls. The theory I proscribe to is they were intended to be used by a newspaper to drop inside 50 gallon drums of news print ink and used to thin the ink out when placed on a vibration stand just like those marbles inside a can of spray paint

The variable sizes coupled with random colors lends credence to this theory over some of the others.

That is a very interesting theory, Mr B. 👍

Interesting and possible I guess, I have not measured each ball to check for consistency.

Hello, HKC.

I do have a set of the Hyatt Gumballs. A few of us bought them a couple of years ago when first listed on eBay.
I remember reading the conversation on this forum that was going on then.
I haven’t weighed them, sir, but about three balls in my set were damaged. Fortunately, I was able to replace them with period-correct Hyatt balls from my stock of spares.
Mine although claimed to be unused had slight marks on them. They buffed up well all the same.

I did inquire with the seller and She said the colors were so pretty that She was going to dump them in a big glass, jug or display of sorts. Much happier She kept them as sets.

I got these Hyatt Gumballs in today off of eBay and they have a couple sets left. I made an offer much lower than they're asking price and it was accepted pretty quickly.
They seem legitimate but the weights are a bit off. 11 gr. Difference, So I'm curious if anybody else has a set and can tell me if theirs are that far off as well. Thanks

How do you come up with a deviation of 2.9 when your heaviest is 11 from the lightest. My number is coming from the difference between heaviest and lightest.

I believe my red ball was the heaviest also. I notice the red balls tend to be heavier in a lot of sets. Just an observation I've had.
I'm using standard deviation.

All of the sets I've seen (including the two I own) had markings or small errors. It does not feel like Hyatt put any real quality control on these balls.

And if I'm right about why the newspaper ordered them then why would they. They were going to be dumped in a ink barrel and then thrown away.

Ultimately I don't think it worked out the way they wanted it too and they got stuck with a pallet of sub-standard phenolic balls which sat in a storage room until sold off as a lot and then sold to ball collectors like ourselves.

So we could sit around and ponder their existence and create farfetched and exotic conspiracy theories for them...

Did you know a box of these balls were found on the grassy knoll.

They do seem to be some sort of experiment. They could have been bought in a big barrel instead of individually boxed.

Have a set now so all's good 👍

Somewhere I've read that phenolic balls are used in fracking for oil also. So I guess anything is possible.

Well this explains the conversation on the dynospheres and how my numbers were so different.

I'll have to study it a little further, but can I be the only one using the difference from heaviest to lightest method as a gauge to measure quality?
IMO, the important part is the consistency amongst the entire set and the cue ball weight in relation to the object balls. My Dynaspheres Bronze and Rhodium sets (all phenolic) are the tightest of all the sets I own including Aramith Tournaments. Cyclops Skittles and Hyperion are right there as well which makes sense being as Cyclops evolved into Dynaspheres. I believe the Dynashperes set you are referencing is one the their Dynaphex resin sets. I don't have any experience with those.
