Pool Ball Collecting.

How About A Pool Ball Collecting Sub-forum?

I find this thread a wonderful, entertaining, and useful resource. I want to thank K2Kraze, Rubick's Cube, and others for their fantastic contributions.

It occurs to me that it could be much easier to access if it were its own subforum. Then you could have sticky threads, like perhaps one based on K2Kraze's post on the Aramith lineup (post 526), and so on.

Thoughts?

unknown set

I'm hoping someone might have some information on the set below. No matter what they are, I really like them. I especially like the solids with no circles. I bought this set on ebay advertised as Amarith. There is another set on ebay right now being offered as 1963 Brunswick. I'd appreciate anyone that has any insight on this set. Please excuse the photography. You can see my neon light reflecting on the side of each ball.

Thanks to this thread for tipping me off on some interesting ball sets. Here's some I scored this month

I played a few test frames of Cuemate against myself. Surprisingly fun and they play great. More Cuemate sets are being sold on eBay as we speak for a fair price. Get 'em while you can!

A couple very nice and unique ball sets you have there - the Cuemate especially - one I shared back in thread #565. Playing that game will really challenge your shooting and cue ball control - and over time, your strategies and inventive play scenarios will kick in and become even more interesting the more you play it!

Did you also pick up the special rack for that set from Mr. Smith? I have a couple of them to make racking easy at each end of the table.

Thanks for posting up your great finds, sir!

Thank you so much for the compliments and kind words, jviss - and I echo your sentiments regarding the many contributors to this thread that bring a tremendous variety in both balls and creative writing - always something new to share and keep us engaged

I’m not sure what would qualify for stickie status, but I do know the more folks that stumble across this thread and have regular updates and posts to share, that it will stay relevant and hopefully inspiring - and at least entertaining.

I have hundreds of posts on tap to share over the next few years within this thread alone - with no end in sight. I keep coming across new and unique balls, sets and games.

Stay tuned

I'm so glad I found this thread today. I was out antiquing with the wife last weekend and found an old, complete set of balls in the bottom of a random case so I picked them up for my pool room for decoration. Is there any way to identify what I found? I figured they were just an old set from a local pool hall, but after going down the rabbit hole of this forum... who knows what they are!

What great fortune for all of us that you’ve found the pool ball collecting (PBC) thread, linxhack - some of the wackiest and rarest ball sets have been found while out exploring and antiquing for anything pool related See what you can find and share, sir.

And - don’t hesitate one second firing off a personal message or even private email asking for help or suggestions - anything I can do to help is only a click or two away.

Welcome aboard, linxhack

Hello, Mr bfriesth -

I’m afraid to have to report that you’ve been duped by yet another eBay seller and not necessarily on purpose, sir.

What I’ve found is that many (most) ebay sellers unfamiliar with the nuances and nearly innumerable variations of pool ball offerings around the world, simply do a quick search or review of current eBay postings and find something that looks like what they have - and say it’s the same thing. They were close in a few regards.....let me briefly explain what I can see and think:

First off, Aramith did not make a set with numbers 1-8 on solid balls like the ones shown. Also, I can see the somewhat translucent nature of the white background around numerals 10-15 which is also suspect - and never seen in this ball style known most recently as the Crown Standard (which they don’t show any longer on their official website).

From my dealings abroad and what I know from sets acquired, I “think” this is most likely a ball set comprised of TWO various sets hailing from China that we know does not recognize protected designs or patents and is of lower quality sets you can find amok on Alibaba or similar.

With that said, If you like them - polish and play them But I would say the word Aramith when discussing their provenance - unless some extra Anejo Tequila is served.

Perhaps you could call them a ChinaMyth set.

Since I had posted up some less than wonderful news regarding fellow collector bfriesth latest eBay find a few minutes ago, I thought this may cheer him up...

The match-up I’m certain he and I both wish would be playing in the Super Bowl this coming weekend:

Thank, K2, for that quick analysis. I appreciate the confirmation that Aramith did not produce these. I am certainly trying to know the most accurate history of each set I obtained. I realize that when shopping eBay I am taking some risk that I will get what I am expecting or what is advertised. In this case it was a $125 risk which I though was reasonable. Interesting that they did come in an Aramith box with an Aramith sticker and a receipt from 1993 for $70 although there was no description of what was purchased. They do seem to me that the stripes and solids could have been produced as a single set and each ball is very close to 6oz and 2.25 inches. Thanks again for your feedback. They are from here on called the China Myth set.

Thanks for your attempt to cheer me up. You certainly did. What a great photo of these two great, although loosing, teams. Maybe next year? Never give up.

Hello, gentlemen. :)

I, too, would like to echo Mr K’s sincere thanks for so many kind words regarding this thread. It really does mean a great deal and I’m very grateful. I can only apologise for my absence these last few months, folks. I certainly hope to catch up as soon as possible.

I think your new set is beautiful, Mr B... especially the solids. And such wonderful condition! Tell me, sir: Are the numbers engraved, or printed?

Here’s wishing you all a fine weekend. :)

Good evening, Jviss. :)

I think a COLLECTING sub forum is an inspired idea, dear chap. It would be wonderful to showcase fellow enthusiasts’ cues, billiard literature, memorabilia, and balls of course, all together under one banner. Bravo, sir!

Sincere thanks once again for your most generous sentiments earlier.

I got extremely lucky this week and purchased some harder to find sets. One in particular I've been searching for almost daily for a few years. Stay tuned for pics as soon as they're delivered. :)

In the meantime,

A ball set that I don't believe has been featured in this thread, Functional Snooker.

A game designed to help school kids learn math. Reds featuring the numbers 1 through 15, and the colors each with it's own equation.

Superb, Chuck.

Finding a set that hasn’t yet been featured on the thread is no mean feat to be sure. Bravo, sir!

And your daily quest to find a particular set over many years certainly resonates with me, dear fellow. I have a few myself that fall into that category. I’m intrigued indeed to see your new purchase.

Best wishes.

Not sure if these have been posted...they’re training balls...
..I would call them straining balls....they hurt my eyes if I look too long...

Good evening, PT.

Where on Earth did you find those amazing multi-coloured balls, sir? I’ve never seen them before. Are they actually pool balls?

Best wishes.

Here is the site....I think their angle is that instructions tell you where to hit the object ball...
...but they neglect to inform you that the contact points on the cue ball differ...
...maybe you can line up the symbols.

I sent Steve Davis a message about the Functional Snooker balls. The Nugget told me they never got that far into funding from the Snooker Association to manufacture any balls.
Instead, they just used stickers on standard snooker balls. Looks like we've got some crafting to do, boys.

I would like to put my name in as a supporter for creating a forum space for this type of thread. Maybe a different thread for Aramith, Vigma, Raschig (sp?), Brunswick, misc.

I know I use this thread as a reference when I'm "hunting".

I just wish the photo's on the older posts handn't timed out.
