Pool Ball Collecting.

Good evening, Mr K. :)

Superbly presented as always, dear fellow. I had already played the game, sir, and managed 42 out of 45. Not my finest hour it must be said. I was rather annoyed with myself. The three that stumped me were the Budweiser, Russian and Vigma Irish.

Best wishes,
RC.

Hello, Rubik’s! Good to hear you’re back on the baize and in fine form, sir. Forty-two of 45 you say? Impressive!

It’s not surprising that your attempt was foiled by a Russian and an Irish - and the Budweiser can impair a man’s shooting as well. Fine play indeed.

Since the “rules” were never shared publicly, I’ll spot up the Official Rules in pic format to help answer any questions or situations that may have come up.

It all sounds so simple, Mr K, but I'd wager that one has to be rather good at combinations! :)

What is your high run, sir?

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. :)

A quick heads up to my fellow collectors on the forum.

A set of original Playboys has just been listed (not by me) on eBay. They are not, alas, accompanied by Miss March, but a box of these first editions are a beguiling discovery nonetheless. Not only are they rare (especially so in pristine condition) these are by far the most beautiful version of the iconic branded balls in my view.

K2K and myself already have a set of these in our respective collections, so just thought I'd post up a link in case anyone on the thread might like to snag themselves a great collectible.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm in communication with the seller. The only downside to the offer is no box. Was the original box something special? Any pics of an original box?

Good afternoon, Mr R. :)

I purchased my set directly from the official Playboy gift catalogue and the balls were supplied in one of those generic black boxes with a 'bubble' motif commonly favoured by Chinese manufacturers.

Therefore, sir, I feel very confident in stating that this set never came with any sort of Playboy branded box.

I noted that the seller claims the balls are in an unused condition, but this might be worth confirming before purchase as the photographs are a little blurry so it's tough to tell for sure.

Good luck. :)

The golden era of pocket billiards kicking off the start of the 20th century saw manufactures trying to capitalize on the popularity and tremendous growth of the pool craze across North America - and as a result, many interesting ball set designs were made available to proprietors with hopes of grabbing yet another fan!

The 2 1/8” clay Brunswick Speckled Agate balls were one such offering.

These came to me by way of a tag-along to a more valuable boxed set since the owner wanted things fast and easy. No original cue ball or box, but they prove to be in fine original condition and from what I can see, never cleaned or restored. That will follow under my care soon.

For now, a set to have in the PBC thread for all to see - and perhaps others can share their clay Agate sets.

This past weekend I visited the local antique store hoping to find a soda crate.
He had just 1 and I got it for $15. Made a perfect display for my antique set plus my small collection of autographed balls.

A nice set of Hyatt clays and signed balls, forabeer - with a fine repurposed crate serving the perfect host to all of them for display.

Well done! I also appreciate the simple ball stands. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! The old table actually came with 3 sets of old balls. Gave 2 sets away:) Thanks again.

In the spirit of Spring Training and the Major League Baseball season around the corner, my latest acquisition:

That official MLB cue ball is a fine addition to your collection, rexus31 - and perfectly paired when playing the game of Baseball....and hopefully your full set of the Aramith Premiers with the matching baseball expansion set of numbered balls 16 through 21. Do you have that full set (yet), sir?

I do not. I've not even looked at them. Maybe it is time I start!

Good afternoon, everyone. :)

A gentleman from New Jersey (not me) has just listed a rather fine set of rare Raschig R15s in their iconic red box. He's asking $400 but is apparently willing to negotiate with the MAKE AN OFFER option.

Just thought I'd give my fellow collectors on AZB the heads up in case they're looking for a set.

Best wishes,
RC.

Thank you, sir. What is the difference between the red box set and this blue box set for sale here on AZB for $475?

Hello, Mr R. :)

The only difference is the cueball in the eBay listing doesn't show the small black dot. It might just be somewhere underneath of course, but Raschig supplied this set with both a dotted or plain white at various times. Either is equally desirable in my view.

Apart from the small tear, the box looks to be in great shape which is a real bonus. The gentleman is asking strong money at $400 as these normally go for less than the numberless R9s, but then again they're only going to get rarer and more sought after by the year. Anything beginning with a 2 would be a bargain in my view.

Best wishes,
RC.

I believe that the red box sets were probably later in manufacture than the blue. The basis of this guess is that, although the balls are of equal quality in either case, the red boxes themselves are definitely superior.

I must say, Mr R, that set you have pictured looks absolutely fantastic! Sometimes the colours of the R15s can fade a little, particularly the yellows, but that example really is in beautiful condition.

Thank you for sharing, sir.
