Pool ELO Ranking

A few months ago I started with a ELO-based ranking system in my local pool-club. Almost 60 players already are on it now. For the moment I'm keeping it small because all the work it takes to process all results. But I'm thinking about making it fully automated. So the best way is to set up a website for it. That way, more players (international) can make use of it.

There is no cost for players to get on the rankings, everyone can join for free! It seems to me like a nice way to see how good players are in comparison to others, pro's and amateurs.

But... a website like that, costs money... And that's why I started a crowdfunding.

It will also be possible to put ads on the website.

Yeah, but not easy to process. I'm doing it in an Excel-sheet for the moment, but it would be better to automate it, and let players submit their own matches.

The idea is that any match can count, even friendly matches in your own club. On the website you can register as a player and when you register a match, the opponent needs to approve before it will be calculated.

So I hope I can get some money together... I want to do it right from the start!

If you use a more well known funding site, you will probably get better results. If you use indiegogo, for example, the money you raise can still be applied to the project, even if you miss the mark.

Many people will be leery of donating to an unknown person through an unknown website.

Try indiegogo or kickstarter.

Youve got a nice idea. Ive had a few myself and it seems that every time that I had to depend on someone else to do anything...even if it meant money in their pocket, something went wrong.

Hi there,

I wrote all the software for my local BCA league... a mixture of Java, Flex, and Perl with MySQL db.

I added in ELO computation into our stats just for the hell of it. Was a simple process given how the rest of the system was already in place.

Here is a link to our stats for the season that just ended (that's myself in 3rd place) and you can see my ELO is low because I had horrible finish to the season.

As for how useful it is? I dunno, most people don't even know what it is, even after I explain it to them. It reveals a little bit of info, but not really that much.

It's a nice idea, but you can get a site like that up and running for ~$15 a month for hosting and ~$10 a year for domain name. It's really quick and easy to get great scalable hosting in today's age (amazon ec2 for instance).

So I'm not sure why you need so much funding... at least until the site reaches critical mass.

It's very interesting, in fact we were talking about it here in Greece now that we have started our union (Hellenic Pocket Billiard Union).
We plan on meeting with people from Bridge (card game) federation and get some info about it, it's similar to what goes on in Chess.
If we have some useful info to add I'll be back.

A system like this is being used in Wisconsin. A friend of mine set it up himself and runs it, updates the games himself, etc. He's got a Donate button on the site to help him with the funding.

Here's the warning. Pool creates drama! Many pool halls hold tournaments using the rankings in the system (ie under 600 rating only, etc). Too much drama (mostly from people who don't understand the system) about people sandbagging, reporting incorrect scores to affect their handicap, etc.

I personally think it's a great system. But I think if you let people enter their own scores, it's going to lose some integrity, especially if it's used for anything more than just fun.

Good luck with your project.

Lots of replies, good :)

Well, the budget is quite high now because I really want to build something from scratch and make sure the layout and code is solid.

The automation has to be foolproof also, and it needs to be able to calculate loads of results fast. I'm doing this on a very small scale now for a few months and already have 500+ matches and 60+ players. Imagine this going worldwide... thousands of players with hundreds of matches on a daily base if all goes well. I was thinking about making seperate rankings per country + one total ranking.

This is just a ranking for fun, no prize money, cups,... Maybe this could be added later, you never know, but that will need some thinking first.

I started the crowdfunding on another (more known) site too: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pool-billiard-elo-ranking/x/10606599

When the $1000 is hit, the construction will start! Extra funding means more options...

And maybe something about myself:

Real name: Ward Decré (feel free to look me up ;) )

I started playing snooker when I was 16, did this on an amateur level for about 15 years. I did participate in some bigger events, but never had the time to practice enough to do more with it. When I was around 30, I started playing some pool, had some fun, was asked for competitive play and so on... :)

I took over a forum (Poolbe) and expanded it. I also started organizing some tournaments in local clubs in Belgium. Recently I helped the Belgian national Pool federation with starting anew (PBB)

But my main interest is still Poolbe. . Poolbe is more than a forum, it is an independent organization in the pool (and maybe snooker) world to help grow pool in Belgium and beyond.
