Two of my favorite films are The Hustler and the Color Of Money

In these films they show you a few pool hall hustles and i wondered if anyone here knew any other classic hustles?

Ahh- the ever popular, "dump your backer" hustle. Especially hilarious when the dumper gets stiffed.

Kharma's a bizich!

I dont know if theyre classed as hustles or scams/cons

im talking about things like the trick in the hustler, when eddie has been drinking all day and he pretends hes drunk. he has the 8ball (i think) tight against the cushion and he bets charlie he can pocket it

eddie misses a few times and charlie walks out

he says he can make it and will take money off the guys in the bar

they all think he's drunk so wager against him

he then makes the shot

theres another good one in the color of money where vincent misses the shot on purpose

One guy on 8-ball tells the other guy, I bet you, you are not going to shoot in this game again. It's a tough/impossible layout to runout. Sukker takes the bet.
Shooter shoots the 8-ball in and loses b/c he still had balls on the table.
Sukker loses b/c he doesn't get to shoot anymore.

I like that one...maybe I can use it to get my 40 back that I lost the other night.

There's lots of good hustles out there, but you cant learn them for free. Where you at and I'll come and teach you some. Just kidding. Lay your cue across the rails and bet you can roll a ball under it without touching the stick. get the bet, then roll the ball under the table. Sam

Oldie But A Goldie

In The Middle Of The End Rail Where The Balls Are Racked Put Two Balls Frozen To Each Other And Balance The 8 Ball On Top Of Them With The 8 Being Up On The Cushion.

Put The Cue Ball Behind The String In The Kitchen And Bet You Can Hit The 8 Ball Without Touching The Other Two Balls And The Cue Ball Cannot Leave The Playing Surface.

Slow Roll The Cue Ball Toward The Three Balls And During Your Follow Through Nudge The Table With Your Knee.

The Balls Will Separate And The 8 Ball Will Drop Down In Line With The Advancing Cue Ball.

Works Real Good If You Practice So You Can Hide The Knee Move.

Years Ago I Beat A Kid Out Of 5 Dollars With The Lay The Cue Across The Top Of The Table Trick. I Laid It Down Real Good By Trying To Roll It Under Using Differen Spins With My Hand. After About 10 Minutes His Curiosity Got The Best Of Him And Finally He Told Me It Was Impossible.

Saw Him A Few Nights Later In Another Pool Room. When I Walked In He Was Playing Alone On The Front Table And Several People Were Watching Him. He Gave Me The Look And Laid His Cue On Top Of The Cushions And Went Down To Rack The Balls. Then He Started Rolling The Cue Ball And Hitting The Cue. To Make A Long Story Short He Gets 50 Dollars Bet Looks Up At Me Grabs The Cue Ball And While Still Watching Me He Throws The Cue Ball On The Floor To Roll Under The Table. There Is This Loud Crack As The Cue Ball Comes Flying Back At Him Without Going Under The Cue. He Had Overlooked One Important Element In The Equation.......there Were Not 4 Legs Supporting The Table It Was Two Solid Supports The Guys Who Bet Him Knew That As They Played There All The Time.

Another Story Of The Would-be Hustler Hustling Himself Out Of His Own Dough.

The Hustler 8 Ball

I Am Not Trying To Diminish The Quality Of The Film The Hustler. Not Only Do I Own A Video Tape I Had The Sound Taken Off The Video Onto A Casette Tape And I Can Drive Down The Highway Listening To The Movie. It Is Amazing That There Is Little If Any Time In That Picture That Some Noise Is Not Being Recorded.
The 8 Ball Shot Isin The Beginning Sequence When Eddie And Charlie Pull Into The Service Station And Walk Aacross The Street To The Pool And Decide To Wait Out The Heat.
The 8 Ball Is On The First Diamond On The Side Rail. The Cue Ball Is Frozen Against It. He Banks The 8 Ball Into The Corner Pocket. The Shot Is Not That Difficult And Is Not Made 100% Of The Time By Anyone I Ever Heard Of. You Have To Hit The Cue Ball With Extreme Follow And The 8 Ball Presses Into The Cushion While The Cueball Moves To The Side Allowing The 8 Ball To Go Into The Pocket. The Cue Ball Then Does An Increbile Curvy Forward Roll That Really Looks Wierd.
Not Taking Anything Away From The Creators Of The Film But The Most Difficult Part Of That Whole Scenario Is How Long Do You Have To Play Before Those Two Balls End Up In The Proper Position To Take The Shot.
Remember The Film Was Not Made For Pool Players But For The General Public. It Is Not A Documentary.

But..................oh What A Story And What Great Acting By An Incredible Cast.

That shot actually comes up, every 5 or 10 years. The point was, it was a hustle, so when they are not looking, or diverted by Charlie burns, Fast Eddy moves the shot in place. It's a very old shot, a straight rail shot well known in the 1800's. It was first introduced to pool by Joe Hood in 1908, Mosconi had his trick shot book and all of the shots in the movie were from Hoods book. It was a cool hustle. Its not the shot, it is how well the con or the hustle is performed that matters.

I watched a guy, road player, come in and start playing last pocket 8 ball. The guy was an artist. He'd maneuver his balls and the 8 ball to one corner and let the other guy run out his balls and this guy would run the two or three balls around his corner and then sink the 8. He was a master at it. His wife or girlfriend sat on a chair all day and knitted while he played.

He also played some 9 ball and he'd miss the pocket he apparently was going for, go two rails and the ob would go into another pocket and he'd say something like, "Man I can't hit the broad side of a barn. I really got lucky." This guy had action all day long and never lost and no one ever got out of line with him. He not only hustled at the game, but he hustled the players too. I learned a lot that day!
