Thinking tonight about some of the language I picked up from my misspent youth, spent in the seedy pool halls of Irish Denver. To define betting terms, we used something along these lines:
Queege -- a quarter.
Half -- 50 cents.
Bean -- a buck.
Abe -- Five
Ten -- Ten
C-note -- $100.
And then to the others:
Tuna -- a fish; a guy who could and would be hustled for cash.
Shark -- obviosly in the hunt for above.
Railbird -- Guys who hang on the rail, just watching the action.
Sweating -- Watching a match in which you have an emotional or financial interest; but not participating.
Barking -- Trying to influence your opponent with your mouth.
Chirping -- complaining about your rolls.
Skating -- Skipping out on your gambling debt -- the most serious offense in a pool hall and one calling for the ultimate solution:
Thumbing -- Dealing with the scoundrel above.
