We have no local APA league where I live, which is fine by me, as I do not like how the APA operates.
We do have a womens' 8 Ball tavern league, which is like well over 40 years old, here in the valley. You pay in $10. The sponsor taverns open their tables for play. And we get half time drinks for both teams for free. We only pay in the $10...no quarters for fouls or nightly playing fees. At the end, we get trophies...no monies are ever awarded. It is basically a 'ladies night out' league.
The other league I play in is now a BCA-sanctioned 9 Ball League. In previous years, before BCA-sanctioning, we paid $20 or $25 plus $4.00 nightly, and $.25 per foul. We got free t-shirts, plus a picnic at the end. Additionally, while no monies were awarded, we would have a men's playoff, a women's playoff, and then a 2nd Chance mixed playoff....all for all expense paid trips and entry fees for the June Reno Open that used to be held at the Sands. I believe they used to award 4 trips on the mens' side, 2 trips on the womens' side, and 4 more trips on the 2nd Chance side...for a total of 10 trips.
This year, what with the June Reno Open gone, and BCA-sanctioning, we had round robin styled playoffs. On the mens' side, there were 7 cash awards of $300 ea. On the womens' side there were 4 cash awards for $300 ea. I walked away with cash on the womens' side this year.
With all that said....I never enter into a league with the expectation that I will walk away with either a trophy (even tho I do every year), or cash awards. It's a league, and anything can happen. If I wish to get more serious, then I will play in tournaments...but even these have gotten tight. The closest weekly tournament to me only pays top 3 places, and contributes like $25 or $50 to the prize pot...pretty meager winnings here.
I play pool because i just happen to be head over heels in love with the game itself, and the constant challenges it provides me. If, at the end of the evening or league season, someone hands me some cash, well, that's just icing on the cake!
