Earl Strickland spices up Green Time
SUPER CUP: While local hero Wu Chia-ching may be the main attraction in Taipei this weekend the American legend is doing his part to add excitement to the event.

Fourteen of the world's top pool players are in town for the five-day Green Time Super Cup which concludes today. Nearly 400 spectators a day have been packing plywood stands in an arena housed in the basement of the Core Pacific Mall.

The line-up of competitors includes a trio of Philippine stars -- Effrem Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, and Marlon "Marvelous" Manalo. There's also the irascible American Earl "the Pearl" Strickland and German Ralf "The Kaiser" Souquet.

Yesterday, Strickland ran the gamut of poor behavior, such as taunting his opponents, chastising the audience, booing himself, clapping his feet and even fouling on his last shot to concede defeat to opponent Ralf Souquet.

WOW!! Are the pockets in this tournament ever tight.Pockets in Taiwan in general are even tighter.(See article clip below)

It's no wonder that players like Earl (who loves to spin the ball) are struggling.
Other than Manalo (a formersnooker player)it was quite noticible how much Reyes ,Bustamante and the rest of the Phillipino contingent struggled at this years 2005 WPC.

The players from Taiwan seem to have more compact strokes as opposed to the free flowing, longer bridge, longer strokes that many players are used to.Seemingly, it's become a different game.

Here's what that article(Taipei Times) says about their pockets:

This weekend's tournament is turning out to be more difficult than expected as the pockets on the tables have been set at 1.8 inches, which is the narrowest margin permitted by the World Pool Association, according to tournament manager Roger Huang.

"Pockets can be set between 1.8 and 2.2 inches," Huang said. "We chose 1.8 [inches], which is the approximate width of one and a half balls."

Local players have not voiced any criticism, Huang said, but then again, for many, the conditions at this tournament are noticeably better than the rest of the 3,700 pool halls and 70,000 pool tables in Taiwan.

Seeing as the balls are 2 1/4 " maybe they mean 1.8 ball widths? Just a guess.

Lol!

I think what they meant is that the pockets are 4.05 inches wide. Which would be the width of one ball 2 1/4 or 2.25, plus 1.8 which would equal 4.05inches. At least that's the way I understood it and that makes sense to me.

What are the odds?

If you add 1.8 inches to 2.25 you get 4.05, but if you take 1.8 ball widths or 1.8 * 2.25 you also get 4.05. It's the only number that matches up exactly.

Yeah thats it-Thanks-It was too late at night for me to figure that out. Still poorly worded article for sure though.

Earl ...

It's hard to know of what to thiink of Earl, other than
the fact that he intends to 'go down in flames'.

Scott <playing Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire>

"We chose 1.8 [inches], which is the approximate width of one and a half balls."

2.25 x 1.5 = 3.375

This is ridiculously tight and cannot be correct. I think 4.05" is more like it.

Not trying to turn this into another "Earl's a D*****bag" thread, but he just doesn't learn. Must be something about playing Souquet that just drives him into tantrums, ha.

Then why ...

Didn't they state it in the first place as 4.05" wide. The way it is
phrased is misleading, I thought they made a mistake and meant
to say 3.8" wide on the pockets.

As far as Earl, he must have been reading about 8ballBernie's game
plan on here for personality plus when playing ... He has got to
take his meds daily, not weekly ... lol

This is the extent of their comments on pocket size in the article. They never explicitly state 4.05"; that was the deduction of our clever AZB'ers.
