This is a very rare occurrence ; a small article on pool appeared in our local newspaper (the Saskatoon Star Phoenix) today, on the front page of the sports section. I thought this might be of interest to the members, so I have entered it in to the best of my ability. I assume this came in over a news wire service, but no credit was given (that I could see). Please note that I am simply relaying the article and not making any kind of inference.

POOL CHAMP ON THE LAM

A billiards champion from Taiwan has dropped out of a competition to win a place on the Taiwanese pool team at the Asian Games, an official said Tuesday, allegedly because if gambling debts. Jennifer Chen, 31, signed up for last month’s qualifying competition but failed to take part, said Lee Chihnan of the Taiwan Billiard Association. This is the first Asian Games at which women’s pool is to be contested. The games are set to begin in December in the Qatari capital of Doha. Chen, whose nickname is China Doll, won the 9-ball Asian pool championships in both 1999 and 2000. In recent years she has appeared in the top 10 ranking of the Women’s Professional Billiard Association. Taiwanese news reports said Chen went into hiding in the U.S. last month to escape gangsters pursuing her over gambling debts. The report alleges she lost 40 million New Taiwan dollars ($1.38 million Cdn) on World Cup soccer matches. Gambling is illegal in Taiwan, but Chen placed her bets through bookies in Hong Kong, the report said.
